EUGENE, Ore.—Fresh off appearing at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Concordia University got an early jump towards a quality representation at the outdoor edition as the Cavaliers posted 15 national qualifying performances at the Oregon Preview held at Hayward Field on Saturday.

Eight Concordia marks earned automatic status to the NAIA Outdoor Championships while seven met the provisional standard.

“We are really pleased with how our relays came out, these were by far our best performances coming out of the gate,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “It’s always great to come to Hayward Field to kickoff our outdoor season. It was season typical Oregon weather, but it was a nice setup for Stanford next week.”

Two such marks that met the ‘A’ standard also established school records as Cory Pena shattered the all- and time Cavalier record in the 800-meter run while the women’s 400-meter relay team consisting of Eunice Makinde, NyEma Sims, Catherine Sims and Stephanie Persaud sliced .10 off the former school record.

Pena placed second overall in the open 800 with a 1:51.04 to take nearly a full second off Jessy Brown’s 1:51.88 which was set in 2009. The women's sprint relay placed third overall with a 47.06.

Making her CU debut, NyEma Sims also moved into the school’s No. 2 all-time ranking in the 200 with a 24.75 to earn the automatic qualifier while also joining Persaud, Catherine Sims and Junia Limage in the women’s 1,600-meter relay which earned provisional status with a 3:56.80. Earlier in the day, Limage nearly set a personal record in the 800 with a 2:15.96 to reach the ‘B’ standard.

The Cavs captured five automatic qualifiers in the throwing events with standout performances from Aria Nojima in the javelin, Emily Redmayne-Titley, Kayla Xavier in the shot put and Gabriella Dixson Bo Johnson in the hammer throw. Dixson and Xavier came back to record provisional marks in secondary events with Dixson reaching the barrier in the discus and Xavier in the hammer.

In her first competition since 2009, Nojima defeated the women’s field in the javelin with a 143-6 effort which fell just shy of her career best of 147-8 while Xavier, making her outdoor debut for CU, placed first in the shot with a 46-2 heave.

Fresh off an All-America performance in the weight throw in the indoor season, Johnson posted a 186-8 in the hammer for a 6-foot personal record.

Katherine Tripp earned provisional status in both the shot and the discus and Sharayah Kenady hit the ‘B’ standard in the hammer throw to round out the additional Concordia qualifiers.
Others reaching provisional status for the Cavaliers included: Gabriella
