8 Earn Red Lion Player of the Week Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Eight CCC student-athletes have been recognized as Red Lion Players of the Week for their performances during the period March 14-20.

Baseball

Player – College of Idaho’s Izaac Garsez, a 6-1 junior center fielder from Caldwell, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Baseball Player of the Week. In four games, Garsez batted .462 with one double, two triples, and four RBI’s. He extended his hitting streak to nine games, and has tied the single-season school record for triples (8). He also had four stolen bases to give him a conference-leading 22 on the season.

Honorable mention: Kyle Taylor, Corban; Mike Cero, Concordia.

Pitcher – College of Idaho’s Bobby Wassman, a 6-1 senior from Puyallup, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Wassman pitched eight innings of four-hit relief as the Yotes defeated Corban in an NAIA West game, 14-5. He walked one and fanned six as C of I extended its winning streak to 11.

Honorable mention: Colby Sokol, Corban; Shayne Nakata, Concordia.

Softball

Player – Corban University’s Courtney Castronovo, a 5-7 freshman outfielder from Salem, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Softball Player of the Week. Castronovo helped the Warriors to a 3-1 record, batting .538 with one double, three homers, eight RBI’s and six runs scored. She set a school record with 7 RBI’s in a 12-4 win over Easter Oregon.

Honorable mention: Nickayla Skinner, College of Idaho; Gabby Stover, Northwest Christian; Emily Anderson, Eastern Oregon.

Pitcher – College of Idaho’s Nickayla Skinner, a 5-8 freshman from Mountain Home, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Softball Pitcher of the Week. Skinner had an

impressive weekend for the Yotes, tossing a three-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over Northwest Christian and throwing a two-hitter in a win over Corban. In 14 innings of work, she fanned 22 batters and walked just four while picking up two complete games.

Honorable mention: Makenzie Marchbanks, Corban; Jenna Royce, Northwest Christian; Jennifer McDonnell, Eastern Oregon.


Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Concordia University’s Cory Pena, a junior from Kodiak, Alaska, has been named the Red Lion Male Track Athlete of the Week. Pena set a school record en route to registering the NAIA’s top 2011 performance in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 1:51.06 at the University of Oregon Preview. Pena finished second overall, placing behind former NCAA Division I national champion Tyler Mulder.

Honorable mention: David Brown, Corban; Tyeson Wood, Warner Pacific.

Field – Concordia University’s Bo Johnson, a sophomore from Toledo, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Male Field Athlete of the Week. Johnson opened the outdoor season with the NAIA’s leading throw in the hammer, posting a six-foot personal best of 186-6 at the University of Oregon Preview. Johnson placed second overall behind University of Oregon All-American Jordan Stray.

Honorable mention: James Myrvold, Corban; Robbie Haynie, Eastern Oregon; Traevone Bowie, Warner Pacific.


Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Concordia University’s NyEma Sims, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Female Track Athlete of the Week. Sims posted top-five NAIA performances in four events at the Oregon Preview last weekend. She scored NAIA automatic qualifying marks in the 200 and the 400-meter relay while notching a provisional qualifying mark in the 1,600-meter relay. Her time of 24.75 in the 200 is the No. 3 mark on the NAIA outdoor performance list, while her time of 57.51 in the 400 holds the No. 5 position. Sims helped set a school record in the 400 relay with an NAIA-leading time of 47.06.

Honorable mention: Courtney Welling, Corban; Brittany Arch, Northwest Christian; Mikayla Garrard, Southern Oregon.

Field – Eastern Oregon University’s Anne Barnett, a senior from Hermiston, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Female Field Athlete of the Week. Barnett had a big home meet, winning the javelin (128-9), hammer (142-10) and shot put (32-5 ¾) while registering an NAIA provisional qualifying mark and three Cascade Conference Championship marks. Her hammer and javelin marks rank among EOU’s top 10.
