BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. –
Concordia University scored five runs in the sixth inning en route to a 6-4 nonconference baseball win over Lewis & Clark Wednesday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex.

The win improves Concordia’s record to 7-17. Lewis & Clark falls to 3-17 with the loss.

Concordia scored its first run in the top of the second inning as Tim Reavis scored on a bunt single by Mike Dickman with two outs. Reavis singled, stole second and advanced to third on Ben Talbot’s groundout before Dickman brought him home with the bunt.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. An error by CU third baseman Riley Tubbs allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, and after a sacrifice bunt he came in to tie the game on a single to left field. Two more singles followed to score the Pioneers’ second run and give the hosts the one-run advantage.

CU broke through in the sixth inning, as the Cavs took advantage of Lewis & Clark’s control issues on the mound and an error by the Pioneers shortstop to score five runs on two hits. With one out, Brady Miletich and Reavis were both hit by pitches to put runners at first and second. Talbot reached on the error to load the bases, and with two outs Danny Brown walked to force in the tying run. Odie Hollingshed brought home two more runs with one of his three singles in the game, and Tubbs drove in the final two in the inning with a double to right center to give CU the 6-2 advantage.

Lewis & Clark added a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull within three, and the Pioneers had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the ninth as Jared Young came in to pick up the final out with the bases loaded and the Pioneers within two.

Steven Taft pitched five innings, yielding two unearned runs on five hits to get the win for Concordia. Young earned the save by picking up the final out of the game with the tying run on second.

Hollinghed led CU with three hits in four at bats, scoring a run and driving in two more for CU. Tubbs’ two-RBI double served as his only hit in the contest, while Reavis finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored for the Cavs.

Concordia returns to action this weekend with a Cascade Collegiate Conference series at Corban University. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday.
