Holtz and Peters Named NU Athletes of the Year
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Seniors Lauren Holtz (volleyball) and Greg Peters (basketball) were named the 2011 Northwest University Female and Male Athletes of the Year tonight in front of a capacity crowd at the first annual Hall of Fame Banquet and Sports Benefit held on the Kirkland campus. Eleven inductees into the NU Athletics Hall of Fame were also honored.
Holtz, of Brier, Washington and a Communications major, was named 2007 Cascade Conference Freshman of the Year and first team All-CCC in the fall of ‘07. Lauren was also named a 2007 CCC Player of the Week and was a member of the NAIA All-Region team during her first season as an Eagle. She was voted All-CCC Honorable Mention in 2008 and team captain for the 2008, ’09 and ‘10 seasons. In 2010, Holtz was again named to the first team All-Cascade Conference team.
Lauren finishes her Eagle career with 1,046 kills (2.89 kpg) and 1,054 digs (2.91 dpg) and a service percentage of .338. She is the NU all-time leader in career digs and #5 in kills and the only player in the school's history to have over 1,000 career kills and digs.
Holtz earned varsity letters in volleyball (3) and track (2) while at Inglemoor High School in Bothell, Wash. She was named first-team All-Kingco Conference and was a two-time team captain. She is the daughter of John Whiteman-Holtz and Susan Frisbee and has one brother.
“Lauren is a tremendous athlete and woman,” stated Eagle head coach Jessie Dietrich. “I am so happy that she is being honored as Female Athlete of the Year, she truly deserves it.”
For Greg Peters of the island nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, it was improvement each year as an Eagle which culminated with his being named to the 2010-11 first team All-Cascade Conference team, CCC Defensive Player of the Year and NAIA Division II third team All-American. Greg led the NU team in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots and field goal percentage this past season. Peters finishes his career with 931 points, 888 rebounds and 107 blocks. He is the #1 all-time NU leader in career blocks and blocks per game. Greg is also a four year member of the NU track & field team, competing in field events and relays.
Peters is also an outstanding student majoring in Environmental Science and is a three-time CCC All-Academic team member and a two-time NAIA Scholar Athlete in both basketball and track and field. He has also been recognized in 2009 and ’10 as one of the top 100 scholar-athletes in the state of Washington by the Washington State legislature.
Greg is the son of James and Melena Peters of Belmont, St. Vincent and has 7 brothers and three sisters.
“Once again Greg has made us all proud,” commented John Van Dyke, men’s head coach. “Being named the NU Male Athlete of the Year is fitting because he epitomizes what we want our student-athletes to work towards in their time here. Greg is a wonderful human being and it has been an honor to have him in our program the last 4 years.”
