Izaac Garsez extended his hit streak to 12 in losses to L-C
LEWISTON, Idaho - Lewis-Clark State used a pair of timely home runs and 27 hits on the afternoon to sweep a NAIA West baseball doubleheader from The College of Idaho, 8-3 and 7-1, at Harris Field.
The wins for the No. 4 ranked Warriors (16-6, 6-5) ended C of I’s 12-game win streak, as L-C now leads the four-game series, two games to one.
The opener saw the Coyotes (19-12, 9-6) jump out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Izaac Garsez belted a solo home run and Jordan Lanman added an RBI single to pick up Tanner Hodges, who was hit by a pitch and stole second.
L-C took advantage of a two-out walk and an infield single in the fifth to set up Alfonso Casillas, who blasted a three-run homer to put the Warriors on top for good. Kevin Lovelace capped a three-run sixth with a two-run single, with the hosts adding single runs in the seventh and eighth for insurance.
Casillas, Lovelace, and Gino Casini each had three hits in the win, while Cody Garner got the win, working around six hits in relief. Garsez, Jeffrey Harris, and Gavin Gamboa each had two hits for the Yotes.
Game 2 saw L-C take a 1-0 lead in the first on a Trent Bridges solo homer, then added three runs in the third – two on a Brian Gaylord homer, another on a Casini RBI single.
The C of I would cut the margin to 5-1 in the sixth on an RBI groundout – but were unable to get closer.
Jorge Sanchez tossed three-plus innings of one-hit relief for the win, with Casini and Bridges each logging three hits. Todd Griffiths had two hits for the Yotes, while Garsez added a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 and recorded his 25th stolen base of the year.
The series finale is tomorrow at 1 p.m. (PT)
