Mike Safford - C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho - Nickayla Skinner tossed the sixth no-hitter in College of Idaho history in Game 1, then went 2-for-3 with a home run in the late game, as The College of Idaho completed a sweep of Cascade Conference leading Southern Oregon, 1-0 and 12-6, at rainy Symms Field.
The freshman allowed just two bases runners in the first no-hitter by the Lady Yotes (14-8, 6-2 CCC) since 2008, striking out eight. Her masterpiece was aided in the sixth inning by a diving catch in left field by Molly Mills on a liner from Gina DiMaggio.
The C of I plated the lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Nikki Shumway reached on a bunt single, then scored on a RBI double to the right-centerfield gap from Kristen Haugen.
Jordyn Kurtz was the tough-luck loser for the Raiders (7-10, 4-2), allowing just five hits in the complete game effort.
Game 2 was a slugfest, as the Lady Yotes scored at least one run in every inning. A Caylin LePire RBI double in the first capped a two-run frame, with The C of I making it 3-0 in the second on a Shumway RBI double.
SOU got within a run in the third on a Katie Moy RBI single and a Rayna Okimoto RBI double, but the Coyotes responded, as Skinner lined a first-pitch homer in the bottom of the frame, with Shumway blasting an opposite field grand slam to make it 8-2.
The Raiders would not go away, as a Moy RBI double in the fourth got Southern within 8-5, but The C of I wouldn’t stop, as a Britney Croner RBI double in the fourth made it 9-5, a Haugen sacrifice fly in the fifth pushed the margin to 10-5, with a LePire sacrifice fly and a Hannah Johnson RBI single pushing the margin to 12-6 in the sixth.
Skinner got her second win of the day in relief in Game 2, allowing four runs and seven hits. Five different Lady Yotes had two hits, with LePire going 2-for-3 with two RBI, Shumway 2-for-4 with five RBI, and Kayla Webb going 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Moy went 4-for-4 in the loss for the Raiders.
The Yotes were scheduled to head to Montana for a Spring Break trip to meet Dickinson State and Great Falls, however, the games have been postponed due to snow. Next up for The C of I is Concordia University next Friday in Portland, Ore.
