10 Earn Red Lion Player of the Week Honors
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Ten student-athletes in the sports of softball, baseball, golf and track and field have been named Red Lion Athletes of the Week for their performances from March 21-27.
The honorees:
Softball
Player – Eastern Oregon University’s Emily Anderson, a 5-7 junior from Spokane, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Softball Player of the Week. In four games, Anderson batted .538 with one double, four homers and five RBI’s. She also scored five runs, and had a slugging percentage of 1.538.
Honorable mention: Tamara Feb, Corban; Rayna Okimoto, Southern Oregon; Nikki Shumway, College of Idaho; Shauna Collins, Oregon Tech; Kayla Vickaryous, Concordia; Gabby Stover, Northwest Christian.
Pitcher – Oregon Institute of Technology’s Taylor Schmidt, a 5-1 sophomore from Medford, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Softball Pitcher of the Week. In three appearances, Schmidt earned three wins while scattering seven hits and allowing no runs in 19 innings. She also fanned 11 batters. Schmidt was also 7 of 15 at the plate.

Baseball
Player – Corban University’s Steven Blum, a 5-11 junior from Salem, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Baseball Player of the Week. In two games against NCAA Division III foe Lewis & Clark, Blume batted .667 (4 of 6), scored three runs and had one RBI. He was 3 for 3 with three runs scored in the first game.

Pitcher – College of Idaho’s Mitch Dame, a 6-0 senior from Kimberly, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Dame tossed a complete-game five-hitter to help No. 21 College of Idaho post a 3-1 victory over No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State. He did not allow a hit after the fourth inning, and retired 18 of the last 19 batters he faced.

Men’s Outdoor Track & Field
Track – Southern Oregon University’s James Johnstone, a senior from Lake Arrowhead, Calif., has been named the Red Lion Male Track Athlete of the Week. Competing at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Johnstone earned an NAIA automatic qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing first in a field of 28 (9:11.31). His time is the third fastest in SOU history.

Field – Concordia University’s Eric Whalen, a junior from Tualatin, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Male Field Athlete of the Week. At the Stanford Invitational, Whalen placed 12th in the invitational section of the javelin, posting a mark of 174-4. He was 11th in the collegiate shot put as he registered an NAIA provisional qualifying mark of 50-8 ¼.

Women’s Outdoor Track & Field
Track – Concordia University’s NyEma Sims, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Female Track Athlete of the Week. Sims was a part of two school records and three separate top two NAIA performances at the Stanford Invitational. She shattered the school mark in the 200 with a time of 24.38, and she came back to anchor the 1,600-meter relay team that posted the NAIA’s top time (3:50.45) this season. Sims also recorded the NAIA’s No. 2 time in the open 400, clocking a time of 56.41.

Field – Concordia University’s Gabriella Dixson, a sophomore from Battle Ground, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Female Field Athlete of the Week. Dixson posted the NAIA’s top mark in the discus while adding the nation’s second-best effort in the hammer throw at the Stanford Invitational. Dixson placed fifth in the discus (145-8) and sixth in the hammer (166-8).

Golf
Men: Concordia University’s Taylor Schmidt, a freshman from Boise, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Male Golfer of the Week. At the Warner Pacific Invitational, he posted his first individual collegiate victory to help the Cavaliers to their third team win of the year. Schmidt carded rounds of 67-74-84 to win the event by three strokes.
Honorable mention: Joey Duwe, Corban; Tyler Falk, Northwest Christian.
Women: Concordia University’s Sara Molyneux, a junior from Vancouver, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Female Golfer of the Week. Molyneux captured medalist honors at the Warner Pacific Invitational, winning the event by a single shot. She helped Concordia to its third team title of the season.
