GENEVA, Ohio – The Eastern Oregon University track and field team had an impressive start to the NAIA Indoor National Championships Thursday.

The Mountaineers’ Robbie Haynie leads the Heptathlon field after the first day and four events. The junior holds a slim 20-point lead over defending national champion Casey Stevick. Haynie’s Day 1 total was 3,019 points, 137 points ahead of the pace he set during the qualifying. The Nampa, Idaho native recorded personal records in all four events.

Dustin Cloud is having an outstanding start to the Heptathlon as well. The senior sits in sixth place after the end of the first day. Cloud is 94 points better than his qualifying day one pace. He hit three personal records through four events.

The 60-meter dash, Long Jump, Shot Put, and High Jump were the events on Day 1. Haynie won the High Jump and was second in the Long Jump. Cloud finished third in the High Jump. The Heptathlon wraps up Friday with the 60-meter Hurdles, Pole Vault, and 1,000-meter run.

The EOU women’s Distance Medley Relay team of Laura Hansen, Talissa Baldovino, Sarah Hanchett, and Christine Eckstein ran a school-record 12:08.90. Despite the phenomenal time, the Mountaineers narrowly missed qualifying for the finals, finishing ninth. Eastern was just a nine-hundredth of a second behind the eighth place team. EOU’s time was 29.18 seconds faster than their seed time and beat the previous school record by 13.05 seconds.

The Mountaineers’ men’s DMR team of Hans Rolle, DJ Flores, Ryan Booth, and Kody Coxen did not have the same success as the women’s team on the track. Eastern Oregon failed to advance to the finals with a time of 10:22.41, well off their qualifying time of 10:09.57.

Eastern has several athletes competing on Day 2 of the national championships Friday. In addition to the Heptathlon finishing, Flores and Karlee Coffey run in the 3,000-meter semifinals. Booth, Hanchett, and Alma Garcilazo race in the 800-meter semifinals. And, Anne Barnett will be in the women’s Weight Throw.
