CU Golfers Eighth in Loaded California Field

JAMUL, Calif. –In a field which featured six teams that finished in the top 35 in the final poll last season and three more that received votes, Concordia placed eighth overall out of 13 teams at the the 34th annual PLNU/Smee Builders Invitational held at Steele Canyon Golf Club.
While playing in familiar wet conditions to open the tournament, Concordia (308-317-313—938) got a quick start posting a 24-over 308 to hold on to second place through the first round. A 317 in the second round brought the Cavs down to seventh place in the team standings before falling one last spot with a 313 in the finale.
Our Lady of the Lake (Tex.) won the team title, beating out NAIA No. 24-ranked Holy Names (Calif.) by one stroke (912-913). The host Sea Lions of Point Loma University slipped from second to third over the final 18 holes (318-296-303—917).
Behind the Sea Lions were No.5-ranked The Master's College (315-309-301—925) and No. 15 Victoria (316-302-307—925). Eleven strokes ahead of CU, California Baptist and CSU San Marcos tied for sixth place while the Cavs held off No. 13-ranked Wayland Baptist (318-306-316—940) by two strokes.
Jed Dalton (74-75-77—226) led Concordia by tying for fifth place in the individual standings. Dalton opened with a team-low 3-over 74 and backed the round up with a 75 to tie for third place heading into the final round of play.
Freshmen Jesse Heinly (77-78-79—234) and Taylor Schmidt (77-65-77—240) finished the tournament as the team’s second and third golfer with Heinly cracking the top 2 with a 22nd-place finish and Schmidt bookending an 86 in the middle round with 77s to end the two-day affair in 46th place.
Jonny Miller (80-79-83—242) and Kevin McBride (85-85-80—250) rounded out the Concordia roster.
Aaron Flores of Our Lady of the Lake was the individual medalist in the 71-man field, shooting a 4-over 217 to beat out Kevin Anderson (219) from The Masters College by two shots.
Concordia returns to competition on March 21-22 when it travels to Warner Pacific Invitational held at the Green Meadows Golf Course in Vancouver, Wash.
