Kurtz Leads Raiders To Split
ASHLAND, Ore. -- Junior Jordyn Kurtz struck out 10 batters to help lead Southern Oregon to a Cascade Conference split with Corban. The Raiders won the opener 5-0, while the Warriors came back to win the nightcap 13-2.
Southern Oregon now sits at 8-11 overall and 5-3 in conference play and hosts Northwest Christian tomorrow at 11 a.m. Corban improved to 15-10 overall and 7-3 in conference action.
In the opener, Kurtz was in complete control. The junior struck out seven batters in the first three innings.
The Raiders got on the board in the first after Brooke Springer bunted for a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and then scored on a bad throw by the catcher on the steal attempt.
The lead stayed that way until the fifth when a throwing error on a bunt attempt rolled all the way down to the corner in rightfield, allowing two more SOU runs to score for a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Raiders added two more, sparked by a Kurtz double, a single by Irene Barrantes and a triple by Gia Dimaggio.
Dimaggio had two hits to lead the SOU offense.
The second game was all Corban.
The Warriors scored four in the top of the first, highlighted by singles by Stephanie Nippert, Tamara Feb and Emma Winckler.
Corban then put the game away in the top of the six with six runs, including a grand slam by Lounette Jackson.
Nippert finished the game with three hits, while Feb and Courtney Castronovo each had two hits.
Winckler picked up the victory in the circle for Corban.
Melissa Corn, Rayna Okimoto and Sarah Wharton each had two hits for SOU.
