SPOKANE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University track and field team landed four NAIA Championship automatic qualifying marks Saturday at the WAR meet.
The fourth annual Albertson’s WAR is scored as a two-team meet, the schools representing Washington versus the school’s representing Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The schools from the Evergreen state are scored together, while the other state’s schools are scored together, Washington won for the fourth consecutive year.
Unlike the past two years, the weather was contributed to quality marks at this year’s meet. Anne Barnett had one of those marks for Eastern. The senior threw an NAIA auto mark of 136 feet, nine inches in the women’s javelin. She finished fourth in the event, now has the fourth best mark in the NAIA, and has the second best throw in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Alma Garcilazo was the second Mountaineer to hit an NAIA auto mark at the meet. The junior hit her second auto mark this season finishing fourth in the women’s 1,500 meters. She crossed the line with a time of 4:37.30. Garcilazo’s mark is currently the second-fastest time in the conference; she currently has the top time in the 800 meters. Her 800 time is third best in the NAIA and her 1,500 time is currently sixth.
Garcilazo would later finish fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 57.45, to win the second heat. The Umatilla, Ore. native’s finish was just .45 of a second away from another NAIA auto mark. The time is second in the Cascade Conference currently.
Ryan Booth had the third NAIA auto mark of the day. The junior came in fourth in the men’s 800 meters with a time of 1:52.82. His mark is the sixth best in the NAIA so far this season and second in the conference.
Eastern Oregon’s final NAIA auto mark came from Kimmy Moore. The junior broke her own school record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:03.89 was fifth-place Saturday, but ninth-best in the NAIA this season and is the top mark currently in the conference.
DJ Flores ran his first collegiate 1,500-meter race and finished second. The sophomore narrowly missed the NAIA auto mark by .19 of a second. He crossed the line with a time of 3:55.44, the second best time currently in the conference.
Andy Munsey finished fourth in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 172 feet, one inch. The mark is an NAIA provisional qualifying mark, and the fourth best in the conference.
The Mountaineers posted 22 lifetime best marks, along with eight conference championship qualifying marks. A select number of Eastern athletes will compete in the Spokane Multi-Events meet Monday and Tuesday at Spokane Falls Community College.
