Tech’s Sentman Wins Mt. Hood Multi Event
PORTLAND — In his first decathlon of the season, Oregon Tech senior Bryant Sentman led the event by 19 points after day 1, and eventually won the Mt. Hood multi event with 6864 points, 247 points over the next closest competitor.
Sentman, a 2010 NAIA All-American, and last year’s NAIA runner-up in the decathlon, sat in first place with 3339 points after Monday. A total of 17 athletes competed in the event, and just 19 points separated first place and third place after five events.
Sentman’s first day was highlighted by a throw of 38-7 feet in the shot put and a height of 6-5 in the high jump.
Sentman also went 20-3 in the long jump, while timing in at 11.83 seconds in the 100 meter race and 53.82 seconds in the 400 meters.
Sentman continued to push forward on day 2, as the All-American placed first in the discus (140-6.5 feet) and the javelin (208-7). Sentman ran the 100 hurdles in 16.06, vaulted 13-6.25 feet and finished the 1500 meters in 4:48.88.
The 6864 is enough to qualify him to the NAIA national meet, and was just 129 points shy of last year’s runner-up performance at Nationals (6993).
Oregon Tech’s other top-10 performances went to Micah Johnson and Joel Phillips who finished fifth and eighth respectively. Johnson also went 13-6.25 in the vault and ran the 1500 in 4:45.57 to gain the bulk of his points.
On the women’s side Breanna Burns (3244), Tracy Filley (3119) and Sharon Johnson (2984) finished 4-5-6 in the heptathlon.
Filley won the shot with a distance of 34-8 feet and the high jump at 5-1. Johnson took top honors in the javelin (107-4), while Breanna Burns ran the 800 meters in 2.41.87 and went 31-8 m in the shot put.
