LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University track and field hosted the annual EOU Open Saturday and posted several quality marks.
Despite soggy conditions throughout the meet, alternating sunny skies, rain, and wind, the Mountaineers were able to record a number of personal records, add another NAIA automatic qualifier, improve an auto qualifier and add a provisional qualifier. There were also several marks that made it onto the EOU top 10 all-time list and some additional conference qualifying marks.
On the track, Christine Eckstein ran 2:14.54 to hit an NAIA auto mark, smash her season best by eight seconds and set a personal record. Alma Garcilazo broke her own school record in the same race and improved on her NAIA auto mark with a time of 2:09.55. Garcilazo’s time is currently second in the NAIA.
“I had no idea we were running that fast,” Eckstein said. “I was just chasing Alma.”
In the field events, Anne Barnett finished with an NAIA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put. Her mark of 43'6 1/2" is an NAIA provisional mark and also moves her to second on the EOU all time list. The senior already has an NAIA auto mark in the javelin and a Cascade Conference qualifying mark in the discus. Her discus mark of 103' 0" is a conference qualifier. The Hermiston, Ore. native also threw a season's best in the hammer throw with a mark of 148'11", which is a conference qualifier and is seventh on the EOU all-time list.
Robbie Haynie added a conference qualifier in the triple jump with a mark of 46’ 1.5”. It was the junior’s first triple jump in 10 years. Haynie is now third on Eastern Oregon’s all-time list.
Additional new conference championship qualifiers include, Kelsey Kinzer and Kimmy Moore in the 200, Karlee Coffey in the 1,500, Christy Roe in the steeplechase, and Colby Patton in the 100-meter hurdles. On the men's side, Taylor Owens qualified for the conference championships in the 200, Ryan Booth in the 400, Justin Dean in the 5,000 and Forrest Lumpry, Zach Seely, Isaac Updike and Michael Wanta in the 400-meter hurdles. Kody Coxen and Alex Martinez added qualifiers in the steeplechase as well.
The Mountaineers will send a small group of student-athletes to the University of Oregon Relays next weekend, while another group will participate at the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational in Nampa, Idaho.
