PORTLAND, Ore.—A few weeks after witnessing the Concordia women’s 400-meter relay team establish a school record, the Cavalier men followed suit with a record-breaking performance to highlight action at the Lewis & Clark Invitational held at the Eldon Fix Track on Saturday.

Placing third overall, the quartet of Andre Washington, Jameson Futter, Matt Challender and Trevor Schwanz toured the oval in 43.01 to shave nearly a half of a second off the previous school mark of 43.45 which was set during the 2006 season.

“We tried some different relay combinations and we still have some work to do on the handoffs, but they are really starting to come together as a group,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said.

The mark is just shy of one full second from reaching the NAIA provisional barrier of 41.99.

Chris Wilson, another candidate for relay work, broke his own school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.74 in a first-place performance. Wilson’s new mark eclipsed his 2010 effort of 14.78 and earned the senior an automatic qualifier to the NAIA Outdoor National Championships after dipping below the 14.75 ‘A’ standard in the event.

“Chris’ speed and rhythm is so much better than he was at this point last year,” Dalzell said. “He was smooth and powerful. We are excited to see what he can do in both hurdle races the rest of the season.”

Hammer throwers posted the most impressive marks for the CU field team with Sharayah Kenady notching a school record 175-11 and Bo Johnson cracking the 190-foot barrier with a 190-3. Kenady’s toss was a career-best by more than five feet and ousted current teammate Gabriella Dixson’s 171-11 from the record books. Johnson scored a personal record by almost four feet to become just the second Cavalier to crack 190 feet in the event. Also competing in the event, Amanda Federici continued to close in on an automatic qualifier with a season-best 160-11.

Including the three hammer results, two other Cavaliers improved upon their standings in the national performance lists with Dixson increasing her season-best in the discus with a 158-1, upping her previous best of 156-4 which occurred at the John Knight Twilight and Andria Scheese lowering her season-best in the 1,500 with a 4:38.00 to better her 4:38.71 set at Stanford.

The Cavs swept the women’s sprinting events with Stephanie Persaud taking the 100 and the 200 and Junia Limage defeating the field in the 400. The duo teamed up with Catherine Sims, Eunice Makinde, Kayla Richardson and Linsie Michels to win both relay events, first the 400-meter relay with a 48.06 and a 3:57.63 to close out the meet in the 1,600 relay.

Persaud’s 100 mark of 12.26 fell just 1/100 off the ‘B’ standard while Limage ran a 47.98 to flirt with a breaking her career of 57.84. Makinde won the 100 hurdles in 14.71, Kristin Sass won the triple jump with a 34-7 3/4 to give CU women nine event wins.
