No. 16 L-C State Pounds 16 Hits in Win vs. CU

PORTAND, Ore.— Wrapping up a four-game series at Concordia, Lewis-Clark State erupted for 16 hits and scored in each of the final four innings to defeat the Cavaliers 12-1 at Joe Etzel Field on Sunday.
With the win, the 16th-ranked Warriors improved to 20-7 on the season and 10-6 in NAIA West Region play. Concordia fell to 8-20 overall and 3-13 in league play. Three of CU’s eight wins this year have come against the perennial power as the teams have faced each other 10 times this season.
The Warriors managed a single run in the first on an RBI single from Trent Bridges and added three on a home run to right field by Brian Gaylord in the top of the third with bridges and Kevin Lovelace already on base after posting back-to-back singles off of CU starter Josh O’Gorman.
Concordia tallied one hit in each of the first four innings, but could only scrape together a single run in the fourth with an RBI double down the left-field line by Tommy Whalen to score Jon Hoots, who reached by way of an error.
After going down 1-2-3 in the fifth, LC State would go on to score two in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eight and three in the ninth to gain distance on the Cavaliers.
Six different Warriors recorded at least two hits with Kyle Knigge leading the way with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate that netted three RBI. Alfonso Casillas and Billy Silvestri both got credit with two RBI with Casillas knocking a 2-run double seventh and Silvestri connecting on a 2-run double in the ninth.
Concordia registered eight hits on the day with Whalen going 3 for 4 with two singles and the run-producing double.
Tyler Barrett pitched the first seven innings to garner the win. Barrett allowed seven of CU’s eight hits and the lone run, an unearned score, while striking out five. Barrett did not issue a walk while facing 28 batters.
Carsen Nylund allowed a walk and a hit in the eight while Zach Arneson sent the Cavs down in order in the ninth. O’Gorman lasted six innings and allowed six runs, three of which were earned.
Concordia will return to action on Wednesday, April 6 when it travels to face Pacific in a make-up game in Forest Grove, Ore. Opening pitch is set for 6 p.m. Concordia will host the Boxers on Wednesday, April 20 with a 3 p.m. start at the University of Portland’s Joe Etzel Field.
