CU’s Gabriella Dixson won the shot and the discus at the Willamette Invite.
Concordia Women Capture 8 Event Titles at Willamette Invite
COMPLETE RESULTS
SALEM, Ore.—Boosted by a clean sweep in the four throwing events, the Concordia University track & field teams won nine total events, including eight on the women’s side, to highlight action at the Willamette Invitational held at the Charles Bowles Track on Saturday.
“The weather was better than expected today with off and on showers,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “But we competed extremely well across the board. Our women’s throwers put together a dominating weekend and we built a lot of conference qualifying marks in various events.”
After the CU women’s team captured the top four spots in the hammer on Friday, Aria Nojima and Gabriella Dixson tossed event-winning marks in the remaining three throwing disciplines on Saturday.
In the most dominating performance of the day, Nojima won the javelin by nearly 20 feet with a throw personal record of 152-0 in what represents the NAIA’s top throw as of Saturday evening.
Dixson was one of two Cavaliers, along with sprinter Catherine Sims, to record a pair of first-place performances on the day with wins in both the shot and the hammer.
Fending off a teammate in both events, Dixson recorded a 46-11 3/4 in the shot to topple Kayla Xavier’s 46-6 for first with the marks currently ranked first and second in the NAIA while a personal record 156-4 in the discus gave Dixson the win in the discus over Emily Remayne-Titley’s 153-4. Redmayne-Titley’s effort goes down as 9-foot personal record while the duo is also represented in the top two spots on the NAIA performance list.
“Those girls thrive off each other with their performances,” Dalzell said. “Even though they sometimes aren’t competing in their primary event, they are constantly pushed by what the others are doing.”
On the men’s side, Eric Whalen nailed the NAIA Outdoor National Championship ‘A’ standard in the shot put with a 51-0 heave while Anthony Lantz notched a provisional mark in the hammer with a 173-1.
Along with Xavier’s winning hammer throw which improved her provisional status in the event to an automatic qualifier, Linsie Michels and Alice Taylor paced their way to the ‘A’ standard in their respective events on the track.
Michels crossed the line in fourth place with a 4:37.06 in the invitational section of the 1,500 while Taylor placed third in the 10,000 with a 37:09.49.
Others posting national championship provisional marks included, Junia Limage in the women’s 1,500 with a 4:40.33, Marcus Nelson in the men’s 1,500 with a 3:56.53 and Andria Scheese in the women’s 5,000 with a 17:47.58.
Joining Limage’s open 1,500 win, Catherine Sims defeated the sprinting fields in both the 100 and 200. Sims leaned to a 12.29 in the 100 to take first place by .12 over Portland State’s P’Lar Dorsett and dashed to a 25.45 in the 200 for a more than a full second victory.
With a five-inch outdoor personal record in the long Jump, Dominique Jacoy captured the title by nearly two inches. Hitting a season-best 14.89, Chris Wilson tackled the 22-member field in the 110-meter hurdles for the lone event win for the CU men.
Concordia will return to action on Friday, April 8 when it competes at Western Oregon University’s John Knight Twilight held in Monmouth, Ore.
“Western Oregon always puts on a quality meet. We will continue to move people around a little and have people compete in events they haven’t had a chance in yet,” Dalzell said.
