Cavs Set 4 Meet Records at Pacific Twilight
COMPLETE RESULTS
FOREST GROVE, Ore.—Capitalizing on another near perfect competition day, the Concordia University track & field team continued to rack up NAIA National Championship automatic qualifiers at the Pacific Twilight, held at Lincoln Park Stadium on April 29-30.
The Cavilers won 10 total events with four individuals setting meet records. Gabriela Dixson set the stadium and meet records in the women’s hammer with a 175-10, Catherine Sims in the women’s 400 with a 56.20 and Branko Djuricic in the men’s triple jump with a 47-11 3/4 while Eric Whalen established a new mark meet record in the men’s shot with a toss of 54-0.
For Sims and Djuricic, the performances upgraded season-best marks to earn the NAIA ‘A’ standard after previously resting at provisional status. Already auto qualified in their respective events, Dixson and Whalen added to their season-best tallies with Dixson toppling her previous best hammer effort by more than a full foot and Whalen adding more than 10 inches to his previous season-best of 53-1 3/4.
Marcus Nelson earned the team’s final automatic qualifier on the day with a personal record 3:54.99 in the 1,500 to edge the 3:55.25 ‘A’ standard.
Other improved ‘A’ qualifiers included: Andria Scheese in the 1,500 (4:32.32), Dixson in the discus (163-2), Jesse Staub in the javelin (207-7) and Justin Schlaht in the javelin (193-9).
Scheese’s winning time in the 1,500 and Djuricic’s wining mark in the triple jump were two of four Concordia school records set over the weekend as both men’s relay team etched new times on the all-time CU performance lists. The men’s 400-meter relay clocked a 42.73 to lice .28 off the former record of 32.01 which was set two weeks ago at the Lewis & Clark Invitational while the 1,600-meter relay became the first quartet to crack the 3:20.00 barrier with a 3:19.17 to smash the former record set in 2006 of 3:20.69 by more than a full second.
