Corban Adds Six to Recruiting Class for 2011
SALEM, Ore. – Corban's sixteenth-year head coach Marty Ziesemer announced Thursday the completion of his recruiting class for next season with the signing of six current high school seniors from Oregon, Washington, California, and Colorado.
Ziesemer signed nearby Silverton High School standout Sierra Brusven earlier this year to begin his recruiting class for the 2011 season.
“This is a group of seven players that not only are outstanding players, but will continue to add to our team chemistry with their attitude and Christian faith,” said Ziesemer. “I expect them to fit right in with our 17 returners and help provide more competition for playing time. The Cascade Collegiate Conference for women’s soccer continues to be more challenging every year and this group will help us continue to challenge for not only the postseason but also the conference title and a national tournament spot.”
The Class of 2015 includes Emily Anderson (Salem, Ore.), Danni Buechley (Roseburg, Ore.), Sydney Dreves (Arcadia, Calif.), Amy Jack (Greeley, Colo.), Kaitlyn Mendenhall (Winsor, Calif.), and Terrika Weaver (Renton, Wash.).
Anderson, a 5-foot-8 defender, comes to Corban from nearby South Salem High School where she helped lead the Saxons to four straight Central Valley Conference (CVC) titles. Anderson also helped guide South Salem to three state tournaments that included advancing to the OSAA 6A semifinals in 2009. A 2nd team All-CVC selection as a senior, Anderson will be the third member of her family to attend Corban and don the navy & gold joining older brothers, David and Jonathan, who were members of the Warrior men’s team. Besides her years at South Salem, Anderson also played for Cascade Futbol Club where she was named team captain and helped lead her squad to a pair of championships.
“Emily will challenge for a spot in the back line,” stated Ziesemer. “She is a strong physical player that will provide us additional depth in the defense.”
Buechley, a 5-foot-8 midfielder, arrives at Corban from Umpqua Valley Christian High School where she played three years for the Monarchs before concluding her prep career at Roseburg High School last season. Buechley helped lead UVC to the state tournament as a sophomore in 2008, while being named Skyline League Player of the Year and earning 1st team All-State and 1st team All-Skyline League honors. Buechley began her prep career earning 2nd team all-league honors before being named back-to-back 1st team All-Skyline League. As a senior, Buechley earned All-Southern Oregon Hybrid 1st team honors scoring five goals and handing out four assists to help lead the Indians to the second round of the state playoffs. For her career, Buechley scored 57 goals and handed out 30 assists for a total of 144 points. Along with her high school accomplishments, Buechley also played for the Eugene Metro Futbol Club where she helped lead her team to the finals of the Bend Premier Cup.
“Danni is a player with great potential who can play several positions,” said Ziesemer. “I see her competing for a spot in the defense where she will enhance us with her speed and work rate.”
Dreves, a 5-foot-10 midfielder/defender, will come north to Corban after playing for Arcadia High School in Southern California. Dreves earned back-to-back All-Pacific League 2nd team recognition playing for the Apaches, while also being named the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and twice honored as team captain. Along with her high school accomplishments, Dreves helped lead her club teams to five different championships that included the 2010 US Club Soccer Regional Championships playing for Los Angeles Premier FC (formerly LAFC).
“Syd can play multiple positions in the back,” said Ziesemer. “She is a very strong, composed defender with excellent vision.”
Jack, a 5-foot-3 midfielder/defender, comes to Corban from Greeley Central High School in Northern Colorado. A 2010 Most Valuable Player for the Wildcats, Jack also helped lead Northern Colorado Soccer Club to back-to-back league championships.
“Amy is a fast strong defender who will compete for a spot in our defense from the first day,” stated Ziesemer.
Mendenhall, a 5-foot-8 goalkeeper, will be the fourth member of her family to play for Corban after playing four seasons at Rincon Valley Christian High School in Northern California. A four-time All-North Central League selection, Mendenhall also earned league MVP as a junior and senior after helping lead the Eagles to a pair of second-place finishes in league play. Along with her accomplishments at the high school level, Mendenhall also played for the Santa Rosa United Thunder where she helped guide the team to the state cup finals in 2008 and 2010. While playing club, Mendenhall registered nine straight shut outs against top US club teams. Mendenhall will join her older sister, Amanda, on next year’s team after two older siblings, Kim and Mark, recently played for the Warriors.
“Kaitlyn is a quality athletic goalkeeper who will provide additional competition in this position,” said Ziesemer.
Weaver, a 5-foot-8 forward/midfielder, comes to Corban after playing four years for Seattle Christian Schools where she tallied career totals of 104 goals, 24 assists, and 232 points suiting up for the Warriors. Weaver earned All-Nisqually-Cascade League honors all four years, while also being named all-state three times. The Nisqually-Cascade League MVP as a sophomore, Weaver also earned the league’s Outstanding Offensive Player award following the conclusion of her junior and senior seasons to go along with four straight team MVP awards. Along with her time at Seattle Christian, Weaver also played club soccer for the Federal Way Reign ’92.
“Terrika will enhance our offense with her ability to beat defenders on the dribble with her speed and the ability to score,” said Ziesemer.
Corban, who returns 17 players next season, is coming off its fifteen straight trip to the playoffs following a win-loss record of 17-6 and 7-2 in league play. The Warriors placed fourth at last season’s National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national tournament after opening the season winning their first five games and eight-of-nine to start the year.
