Day 1 Results

GRESHAM, Ore. – College of Idaho’s Austin Basterrechea and Warner Pacific’s Danielle Ricco lead the multi-event slate of events after the first day of competition at the 2011 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.

Behind top marks in two of the five individual events, Basterrechea leads the decathlon field of nine competitors. The freshman from Gooding, Idaho posted wins in the high jump (6-03.5) and 400m (50.69 sec.) to score 3464 points.

Patrick Fennimore of Concordia is close behind in 2nd place with 3280 points after wins in the long jump (21-04.75) and the 100 meters (11.41). 3rd place competitor Dustin Cloud from Eastern Oregon is within shouting distance at 3249. Jason Waltman from Northwest (3190) and Joel Phillips of Oregon Tech (3007) round out the top 5.

In the women’s heptathlon, Ricco won the 100m hurdles (16.55) and the 200m dash (27.12), and placed 2nd in the high jump and shot put to score 2338 points. Oregon Tech’s Breanna Burns sits in 2nd place (2061) after winning the shot put event with a toss of 33-03. She is followed by Allison Rodgers of Eastern Oregon (1774), and Amy Renfro from Corban (1663).

Both the decathlon and heptathlon competitions will continue tomorrow.

The Concordia women’s throwers turned in another dominating first day performance this year, as the Cavaliers finished 1-2-3-6-7 in the discus. Gabriella Dixson, the runner up in 2010, bested the field with a toss of 164-11. She was followed by her teammate and last year’s champion Emily Redmayne-Titley (148-03), and Katherine Tripp (146-02).

Concordia also scored big the men’s discus, placing four athletes in the top seven. The Cavs’ Bo Johnson earned the individual championship with a mark of 155-02. His teammate Ismael Osorio placed 2nd at 154-08, followed by Max Perry from Southern Oregon at 149-10.

Northwest Christian’s Stephanie Hescock led from start to finish in the women’s 10,000 meter run, crossing the line with a time of 36:45.20. 2010 winner Kristine Smith from College of Idaho settled for second place at 37:10.47.

In the final event of the evening, College of Idaho placed four of their runners in the top six in the men’s 10,000 meters. The Yotes’ Greg Montgomery outkicked his teammate Paul Sartin to win in a meet record time of 31:00.41. The top four finishers in fact broke the meet record, which included Sartin (31:01.66), Seth Bridges from Northwest (31:12. 05), and Ryan Gelfi (31.17.02).

Competition will continue from Earl Klapstein Stadium tomorrow, starting at 4:00 pm.
