GRESHAM, Ore. – A perfect day of weather greeted athletes and fans for the second day of action at the 2011 Cascade Collegiate Conference Track & Field Championships at Earl Klapstein Stadium on the campus of Mt. Hood Community College.
Six meet records fell today, as the quality of competition continues to improve year after year conference wide.
Josh Seitz from Southern Oregon put his name in the record books with a new meet record in the 3000m steeplechase. He crossed the line in 9:14.67, just ahead of his teammate James Johnstone at 9:14.69. Isaac Updike from Eastern Oregon placed third (9:18.06).
The Concordia women continued their dominance in the throwing events, scoring a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the hammer. Gabriella Dixson followed her win in the discus yesterday with a new meet record of 176-02. She was followed by teammates Amanda Federici (169-01), Sharayah Kenady (168-10), and Kayla Xavier (161-08).
The third record broken was during the highly competitive 1500 meter run which saw 5 athletes register NAIA automatic qualifying times. A strong kick over the last 100 meters pushed DJ Flores to a new meet standard of 3:49.30. The next three runners also were faster than the previous record set in 2008 by College of Idaho’s Tyler Hopper. OIT’s Keven Jorgenson (3:50.12), Cory Pena from Concordia (3:50.25), and Dominic Bolin from College of Idaho (3:51.14) were all faster than the old mark.
Catherine Sims from Concordia broke her own meet record in the 400 meters set last year with a time of 55.93 seconds. Second place finisher Alma Garcilazo from Eastern Oregon (56.20), and third place runner Junia Limage of Concordia (56.68) joined Sims in posting NAIA automatic qualifying times.
Concordia’s Stephanie Persaud sprinted to a new meet record in the 100 meters. Her NAIA provisional qualifying time of 12.12 seconds replaced the mark of 12.25 set by Southern Oregon’s Emily Dunn in 2007. CU’s Catherine Sims followed up her 400 meters win with a second place in the 100 with a time of 12.35.
The men’s 400 meter record also fell, with Tyeson Wood from Warner Pacific crossing the line in new record and NAIA automatic qualifying time of 48.13 seconds. Second place Jonz Olander from Southern Oregon (48.60) was also faster than the previous record of 48.68 set by Jguwon Hogges of OIT in 2008.
In other action, Concordia’s Loren Moran won the 3000m steeplechase for the 3rd year in a row with a time of 11:05.73. College of Idaho runners finished 2nd and 3rd – Kristine Smith in 11:18.28, and Sora Klopfenstein in 11:27.12.
Concordia’s 4 x 100 women’s relay team defended their 2010 title in the event in a time of 47.50, and NAIA automatic qualifying mark. Eastern Oregon was runner up for the second straight year at 48.98.
The always-thrilling 4 x 100 men’s relay race was won again this year by Southern Oregon, this time in 41.73 seconds. Warner Pacific was close behind at 41.93, and both schools posted NAIA provisional qualifying times.
The women’s heptathlon concluded competition today, with Danielle Ricco from Warner Pacific holding on to her first day lead and finishing with 3776 points. Breanna Burns posted top marks in the long jump and javelin today, but fell short with 3540 total points.
Warner Pacific received their second men’s individual title thanks to Webster Moreland in the long jump with an NAIA provisional qualifying effort of 23-02.75. Jameson Futter from Concordia placed second at 22-10.
In the men’s decathlon, Patrick Fennimore from Concordia ended the day as champion with 6287 points, overcoming first day leader Austin Basterecchea (6218) thanks to strong efforts in the pole vault and javelin.
Competition will continue from Earl Klapstein Stadium tomorrow starting at 10:00 am.
