4 Cavs Earn Red Lion Athlete of Week Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Four student-athletes from Concordia University earned Red Lion Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for their performances at the Mt. Hood Track and Field Festival in Gresham, Ore.

Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Concordia University’s Cory Pena, a junior from Kodiak, Alaska, has been named the Red Lion Male Track Athlete of the Week. At the Mt. Hood Track and Field Festival, Pena won the 800 meters in a time of 1:51.70, just shy of his CCC-leading best (1:51.02) this season. Pena is currently ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in the event.

Honorable mention: Seth Bridges, Northwest.

Field – Concordia University’s Branko Djuricic, a junior from Kraljevo, Serbia, has been named the Red Lion Male Field Athlete of the Week. Already the school record-holder in the triple jump, Djuricic cleared 6-9 ¾ in the high jump to set the CU standard. Djuricic won the event at the Mt. Hood Track and Field Festival and also reached the NAIA automatic qualifying standard.

Honorable mention: Adrian Weber, Warner Pacific; Joseph Babcock, Northwest.

Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Track – Concordia University’s Eunice Makinde, a junior from Phoenix, Ariz., has been named the Red Lion Female Track Athlete of the Week. Makinde cut .06 off her NAIA automatic qualifying time in the 100 hurdles with a mark of 14.56 at the Mt. Hood Track and Field Festival. Her time leads the CCC by nearly a full second. She also ran a career best 12.63 in the 100 and clocked a time of 26.11 in the 200.

Honorable mention: Paige DeLapp, Northwest.

Field – Concordia University’s Kayla Xavier, a junior from Modesto, Calif., has been named the Red Lion Female Field Athlete of the Week. At the Mt. Hood Track and Field Festival, Xavier scored a season-best in the discus (145-7) and a first-place finish in the shot put (45-11 ¾).
