SALEM, Ore. – Despite goals by junior Aaron Kinnes (Gladstone, Ore.) and freshman Derik Chaney (Helena, Mont.), Corban's men's soccer team closed out its non-conference home schedule with a heart-breaking loss to visiting Bethesda Christian, 3-2, Tuesday on Warrior Field.

"Our performance in the final 70 minutes is a much better reflection of who we are as a team," said head coach Paul Meehan. "Unfortunately, we learned an expensive lesson in what happens when we don't leave it all out on the field for a full 90 minutes. That said, I give an awful lot of credit to Bethesda, they are an excellent side and gave us all we could handle tonight. We learned a great deal from the match and in the end we grew from this experience."

Despite a sluggish opening 18-plus minutes for Corban that resulted in a pair of Bethesda Christian goals, the Warriors would cut the Flames' lead in half when Kinnes teamed with senior Devin Chaney (Helena, Mt.) on his second goal of the season. Chaney would begin the play by lofting a high arching ball to the back post where Kinnes was waiting to tap it home after the pass eluded a diving BCU keeper, as Corban got on the board for the first time with the score showing 2-1 in favor of Bethesda Christian.

Corban would have few opportunities during the opening 45 minutes and would settle for a one-goal deficit at halftime.

Bethesda Christian would get the eventual game-winner in the opening minutes of the second half when Cheunyong Park netted his second goal of the game on a one-timer from 35 yards out to put the visiting Flames up by two goals, 3-1, in the 47th minute.

Thirty minutes later, the younger Chaney would score his first collegiate goal after receiving a 50-yard pass from fellow freshman Andrew Stenberg (Hood River, Ore.) over the entire BCU defense. After collecting the ball, Chaney would dribble around a diving BCU keeper before tapping in the Warriors' second goal making the score 3-2 in the 78th minute.

Corban would have one final opportunity with just over two minutes remaining in the game when junior Tyler Hagen (Silverton, Ore.) unleashed a rifle shot from 10 yards out that would have been the equalizer, but missed wide left by a mere six inches.

Overall, Bethesda Christian would out shoot Corban by six (14-8) despite the host Warriors holding the second half advantage, 5-4.

Sophomore net-minder Spencer Anderson (Glendale, Ariz.) would register three saves despite suffering the tough loss, while Bethesda Christian's goalkeeper Hyeokjin Choi made a game-high four saves en route to picking up the win.

Today's loss drops Corban to 1-1-0 overall, while Bethesda Christian opens its season and three-game Northwest road trip at 1-0-0. The Warriors will return to the field after a 16-day lay off on Thursday, September 8th, when Corban travels to Central California to take on Fresno Pacific at 7:00 p.m. on Ramirez Field.
