Ohta Adds Five to Corban's Recruiting Class
SALEM, Ore. – Corban University's head softball coach Nathan Ohta announced Thursday that he has signed five players to Cascade Collegiate Conference Letters of Intent that includes four junior college transfers and one high school product.
The five-player class includes Brittany Chestnut (Newport, Ore.) and Chelsea Schriber (Tillamook, Ore.) from Mt. Hood Community College, Amy Greenough (Portland, Ore.) and Chynna Sandhop (Wenatchee, Wash.) from Wenatchee Valley Community College, and Sprague High School graduate Kyrianna Sorenson (Salem, Ore.).
"I am very excited to have this group of athletes joining our softball team here at Corban," said Ohta. "The speed that Chynna and Brittany add to our lineup will make our offense much more explosive and potent this season, while Amy and Chelsea provide us with a great one-two combination in the circle. Also, Kyrianna will be a nice addition to our defense at the catcher position as well as provide some extra pop in our lineup. I'm happy to welcome this young ladies to Corban, and am looking forward to coaching them this year."
Chestnut comes to Corban after playing the last season at Mt. Hood Community College where she helped lead the Saints to the second of back-to-back NWAACC titles and registered the third highest batting average (0.551) in the NWAACC. The 5-foot-4 transfer was named 2nd team all-league as a sophomore after playing her freshman season at North Idaho Community College.
"Brittany is a tremendous athlete and is a great hitter with outstanding speed," commented Ohta. "She has been very successful at the collegiate level already and having her on base in front of our big hitters this year will give us the opportunity to drive in a lot of runs."
Greenough arrives in the Capital City after pitching last season at Wenatchee Valley Community College where she tied for the league lead in wins with 20 and had the second lowest Earned Run Average (ERA) at 1.18. Prior to pitching last season for the Knights, Greenough spent her freshman year at Blue Mountain Community College in Eastern Oregon.
"Amy is a true competitor with wide variety of pitches, all with good movement and velocity," said Ohta. "She has the ability to dominate games and will be a major component of our pitching staff and team this year."
Sandhop comes to Corban after playing two seasons at Wenatchee Valley Community College where she finished third on the team in hitting (0.435) as a sophomore. The 5-foot transfer earned back-to-back 1st team All-NWAACC honors during her times playing for the Knights.
"Chynna is a very versatile player with the ability to play in both the outfield and infield," commented Ohta. "She has a strong arm, great speed, is very solid defensively and has the ability to hit for both average and power. She is such a well-rounded and fundamentally sound player that she makes an impact for us in every facet of the game."
Schriber will don the navy and gold after pitching the past two seasons at Mt. Hood Community College where she helped lead the Saints to back-to-back NWAACC titles. The right-handed pitcher ranked sixth in the NWAACC in ERA (1.73), while being named all-tournament as a freshman and sophomore. Schriber earned All-NWAACC 1st team as a sophomore, while being named All-NWAACC 2nd team following her freshman campaign.
"Chelsea also has the ability to control games," said Ohta. "She has good velocity, great command of her pitches, and is a very good all-around athlete that will make a huge impact for us this season."
Sorenson is the lone high school player in this group coming from nearby Sprague High School where she helped lead the Olympians to the 6A state playoffs as a senior. The 5-foot-8 graduate earned first team All-Central Valley Conference once and 2nd team honors twice.
"Kyrianna is a strong athlete with a great work ethic," commented Ohta. "She is a very solid defensive catcher with experience in the infield as well. She is a good hitter with the potential to be very successful at the college level. We are excited to begin working with her and look forward to her playing a big part of our success over the next four years."
This five-player class joins a six-player group that signed in mid-May, which included Shelby Mauermann, Jessie Compton, Mallory Murphy, Kayla Peterson, Karly Schmitt, and 2013 early-signee Danielle Horne.
Corban, who has earned back-to-back CCC runner-up finishes, returns eight players from last season's roster that registered a school-record 25 wins.
