Saints and Eagles Battle to Double Overtiime Tie
LACEY, Wash. - Saint Martin's University rallied for two second half goals to tie the game in regulation as Northwest University and the Saints battled to a 2-2 tie in double overtime this afternoon in Lacey. It was the second straight double overtime game for the Eagles and their second straight NCAA Division II opponent.
Northwest's Acacia Johnson booted a deflection from the SMU goalkeeper into the net to put the Eagles into the lead, 1-0, at the 29:43 mark. NU would increase their lead to 2-0 less than 3 minutes later when Jordyn Wilson's header found the goal off teammate Stephanie Cummins' free kick. The Eagles would take that lead into halftime.
In the second half, St. Martin's Sammi Thompson would pull the Saints to within one goal as she beat a NU defender, spun and sent the ball into the far corner of the net from the left side off a corner kick.
In the 80th minute the Saints were fouled in the penalty area and Nicole Nedervelt put her penalty kick past the NU goalkeeper, Jordan Holmes, for the game tying score.
Neither team would score in the overtime periods as SMU would have two shots in the first extra period and Northwest would have one attempt. The Eagles outshot St. Martin's (0-2-2) 18-15. NU's Jordan Holmes recorded 5 saves for the Eagles (2-2-2) while three SMU goalies grabbed a total of 8 saves for the Saints.
"We struggled finding our rhythm today," stated Erin Redwine, Eagle head coach. "but we will learn from it and move on."
Northwest will host NAIA Division I opponent, Carroll College of Montana on Friday, Sept. 16 in Kirkland.
