PORTLAND, Ore. - The Knight  cross country teams started the 2011 season with a strong showing against a tough field of ranked teams from NCAA Division I and Division III at the Pier Park Invitational hosted by University of Portland.

On the men's side, Chris Meeker led the way with a top 15 finish and a school record 19:57 for the 6k distance. Freshman Robert Robertson debuted in a Knight uniform with an impressive 20:51.

"We have a young team with no seniors but some experience in 3 juniors and a talented group of freshman and transfers," said coach Brian Grove. "The men have high goals this season and the freshman stepped up admirably to fill out a strong top 7 today. I look forward to watching this group of young men develop and compete over the course of the season."

For the women, freshman Katelin Renfro finished top for the Knights with a 31st place finish in a field littered with Division I talent. Her time over the 5k distance was a personal best of 20:19. Ericka Hicks and Matice Dameron ran really well today, improving upon their time on the same course last year by over 1:30.

"The women’s squad worked hard over the summer and it showed in their first outing of the season," said coach Brian Grove. "I was happy with the way the women ran as a pack and competed today and it set a good tone for the rest of the season."
