Tyler Hagen and Corban won a key 3-2 decision at C of I
CALDWELL, Idaho - A pair of second half goals broke a halftime tie, as Corban University held on to topple The College of Idaho, 3-2, in a Cascade Conference men’s soccer match-up at Simplot Stadium.
Deadlocked at 1-1, the Warriors (3-3, 1-1 CCC) got a quick goal early in the second half, as in the 49th minute, Derik Chaney was unmarked 25-yards away from the goal on the left side, bending a looping shot into the right corner of the net. Corban would extend the lead in the 68th minute, as Tyler Hagen and Josh Hamilton executed a perfect give-and-go combination in the middle of the field, with Hagen tucking home a winner in the left corner of the net inside the six-yard box.
The Coyotes (2-4, 1-1) would not quit, as a drive by Carlos Gomez in the 74th minute went through the hands of Warriors’ keeper Steven Mason, but the netminder was able to dive and corral the ball just before it crossed the goal line. The C of I would pull within a goal in the 85th minute, when James Collet headed home a corner kick by Brad Byers – but despite a forward push in the waning moments, the Yotes did not attempt another shot.
Corban struck first in the 15th minute, as Hagen made a run down the left side, making a cross over move just outside the box, and drilling a right-footed shot into the right corner of the net. The C of I would answer in the 22nd minute, as Byers took a pass from Parker Waddell in the middle of the field, rocketing a 25-yard shot past Mason into the left corner of the goal.
The C of I held a 22-13 edge in total shots, but Mason made eight saves to help the visitors to the victory.
The Coyotes return to action next weekend with road matches at Warner Pacific and Concordia.
