Southern Oregon Plays No. 24 Westminster to Scoreless Tie
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon traveled to Portland for a neutral-site matchup with No. 24 Westminster (Utah), and after two overtime periods and 110 total minutes the teams tied 0-0.
For Southern Oregon, the tie moves the Raiders’ record to 3-4-1, while Westminster is now 6-3-1. The Raiders return to action next weekend, when they host Warner Pacific in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
“It was a gritty affair,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “I was glad to see our team have a good fighting mentality for the whole 110 minutes, and I thought our team defending was very good.”
Westminster outshot SOU in the opening period 8-3, but the Raiders held a 5-3 shot advantage in the second half and 4-1 advantage in the two overtime periods to finish the game with an even 12-12 split.
“During the overtimes I really felt like we had our foot on the right pedal,” Clement said. “I thought we were going to grab the winner in overtime. Unfortunately that didn’t come, but our perseverance was really good.”
Denise Powell finished the contest with four shots for the Raiders, while Stephanie Carr added three. Sarah Swenson tallied four shots for Westminster, while Margo Hickman and Corie Walch each had a pair.
“They have some dangerous attacking players who have scored a lot of goals this year against good teams, and I think we defended them quite well,” Clement said.
Goalkeepers Jessica Kuehlwein and Dayna Winter-Nolte both played all 110 minutes for their respective teams to earn shutouts.
“I’m really pleased with our team that for some stretches outplayed a top-25 team in Westminster,” Clement said. “It’s a good result for us on the road.”
