Jared Brace opened up the scoring for the Cavs with the eventual game-winning goal in the 54th minute on Friday.
Second-half Spree Propels Cavs to 6-0 Win over Oregon Tech
STATS
PORTLAND, Ore.—The No. 13 Concordia men's soccer team put on an offensive show on Friday, pouring in six goals in the second half to rout Oregon Tech 6-0.
The win moves Concordia to 7-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the CCC so far. For OIT, the loss drops them below .500 at 3-4-0 and 1-2-0 in the CCC.
The onslaught started early in the second half when junior forward Jared Brace (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) shot a ball into the left corner of the goal in the 53rd minute after senior Matt Caniglia (San Francisco, Calif./Lenanon H.S.) played the ball to senior co-captain Facundo Dipascuale (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Lakeridge H.S.) who sent the ball into the box for Brace.
Less than 90 seconds later, Brace attacked again, sending a ball into the middle from the right that sophomore forward Septi Danciu (Bristita, Romania/Evergreen H.S.) flicked to Radcliffe McDougald (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island H.S.). McDougald dove head-first for the ball, punching it across the goal to the right for his first goal as a Cavalier.
Up 2-0, the Concordia offense did not let up, scoring again just four minutes later in the 59th minute after a foul in the box gave Dipascuale a penalty kick. OIT goalkeeper Loren Jessen jumped to the right, but found nothing but turf as Dipascuale skirted the ball across the ground into the right corner for an easy score.
CU struck for the fourth time in the 69th minute. This time, sophomore forward Michael Chamberlain (Wailua, Hawaii/Island H.S.) got the glory. Chamberlain, who had several good looks on headers that found either cross bar, post or air in the first half, finally put in a header after Danciu played a ball into the box after an OIT foul.
Danciu would receive his own chance at a goal just a minute later when Caniglia launched a ball forward from behind the midfield line. Now with the ball, Danciu danced away from a defender and shot the ball from the left, across the goalie and into the right corner of the net.
With under five minutes left, Chamberlain put the capper on a dazzling offensive display from the Cavaliers off an assist from midfielder Tanner Williams (Sandpoint, Idaho/Sandpoint H.S.). Williams played the ball to Chamberlain on the right side, who then gave it right back to Williams. Now in the right corner, Williams sliced through two defenders then put a nice touch on the ball to Chamberlain who put it right in front of the goal from five yards out.
The barrage of scores in the second half came after CU put up a whopping 24 shots in the first half to only four from OIT. None of those shots found the net, however, and the game went to halftime scoreless.
That's when everything changed though. Instead of flooding the OIT with shots, the Cavs struck efficiently by converting their six goals on only 13 shots, a major difference from the first half.
Jessen fought the Concordia attack valiantly in the first half and ended up with 10 saves on the night. Meanwhile, junior transfer Carlos Mendoza (White Salmon, Wash./Columbia H.S.) started the night in the Cavalier goal for his first appearance this season. In his debut, Mendoza saved three shots before fellow junior transfer Humberto Soriano (Phoenix, Ariz./Fountain Hills H.S.) relieved him in the 63rd minute. Soriano had no saves, but led a Concordia defense that only allowed seven shots all evening.
The OIT Owls will try and shake off the loss against Warner Pacific tomorrow, while the Cavaliers turn their attention to The College of Idaho who they face at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Delta Park.
