SOU Women's Soccer Defeats Hope International 3-1
BOX SCORE
FULLERTON, Calif. – Three second-half goals turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 victory for Southern Oregon University Saturday afternoon against Hope International.
With the win, Southern Oregon improves to 2-1 this season with one more match to go on the Raiders’ California trip. The Raiders will face No. 20 Concordia-Irvine Monday at 11 a.m.
“It was a very solid effort from beginning to end,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “We were very pleased with our response to going down a goal; we replied with some very intelligent soccer.”
The match went into halftime with a scoreless tie, but Hope International scored quickly in the second half when Jordan Benson played to the top of the box and bent her shot around SOU goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwein in the 50th minute off a pass from Megan Gonzalez.
It took nearly 20 minutes, but SOU responded when Stephanie Carr headed a cross from Alyssa Bricker into the goal to tie it up at 1-1 in the 69th minute. Carr would add her second goal of the game, and the eventual game-winner, in the 78th minute when she took Denise Powell’s cross from the right side of the back post and knocked it home.
“We were able to stretch the other team out and create attacking chances through intelligence,” Clement said. “Sometimes it’s disconcerting to give up a goal when you’re playing well, but we responded very well and played very nicely.
Jacquie Galvez added an unassisted goal in the 86th minute to give SOU some insurance with a two-goal lead, drilling a shot from 30 yards out just inside the left sideline. The Raiders outshot Hope International 18-to-5 in the match, including 13-to-3 in the second half.
The victory follows a 3-2 loss to Point Loma Nazarene on Wednesday, in which the Raiders scored two second-half goals while trying to come back from a 3-0 deficit.
“We’ve scored five goals in the second half against two good teams since we’ve been down here,” Clement said. “Now we just have to shore a few things up and play well on Monday against a very good Concordia-Irvine team.”
