CU's Alex Blalock scored in the second half to give the Cavs a 2-0 lead over the Mustangs on Monday.
CU Tackles No. 9-Ranked TMC
IRVINE, Calif.—Facing its first three-game slide since 2000, No. 3-ranked Concordia University defeated No. 9-ranked The Master’s College 2-0 in women’s soccer action on Monday.
With the win, Concordia improved to 2-3 on the season while TMC fell to 3-2 overall.
“We weren’t really happy with how we played on Saturday against CU-Irvine,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “I challenged the team to pick up their intensity and they responded today with a win against a quality opponent. We did the important little things on the field today. We were aggressive with our tackles and committed to winning the 50-50 balls in the air.”
Concordia scored its first goal midway through the first half of play with the aid of junior midfielder Adrienne Lommasson. Sending a long cross into the box, Lommasson’s pass set up teammate Alex Thomas, who fired from 12 yards out to beat the TMC goalkeeper.
The Cavs doubled their lead after a through ball from senior midfielder Jackie Hendrickson found the foot of sophomore forward Alex Blalock. From 18 yards out and now one-on-one with the keeper, Blalock completed the counterattack by firing a shot into the near post for her first goal of the season to give CU the 2-0 advantage.
“This was a big win for us. Now we have to build off that momentum and continue to put in complete 90-minute performances on the pitch,” Landy said.
Complete stats for the match were unavailable Monday evening.
Concordia hadn’t previously lost three straight matches in more than 10 years when the team ended the 1999 season with a setback at Seattle University in the NAIA Region I Tournament and started the 2000 season with a pair of road losses in California against highly-ranked Westmont and Azusa Pacific.
Through five games this season, the Cavaliers have played four teams ranked inside the NAIA’s top 20, including No. 1-ranked Lee University (Tenn.).
The Cavs return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they host Pacific University. Kickoff is set for noon at Delta Park.
