NU Eagles Tie Central Washington in Double OT
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The NU Eagles and Central Washington Wildcats played to a 2-2 tie in a double overtime non-conference game in Ellensburg late this afternoon in the 91 degree heat. Both teams scored a goal in each half, but neither could put one into the goal in the overtime periods.
NU's Abby Brauer opened the scoring early with her penalty kick in the 10th minute of the first half. The game then went scoreless for over 35 minutes until Carson McKole tied the game with her goal from an assist teammate Miranda Heslep with just 4 seconds remaining in the half (44:56). The first half ended deadlocked 1-all. NU outshot CWU 8-7 in the first half and 16 fouls were called in the half with Central Washington getting called for 11 of the infractions.
In the second half, Brittany Franks put CWU into the lead with her goal at the 69:02 mark as she put one past the NU goalie from 2 yards out off a cross from teammate Carson McKole.
The Eagles battled back as Northwest's Rachel Saleen tied the match in the 76th minute with her 5 yarder from the right side of the goal off a crossing pass from Stephanie Cummins.
Northwest U.'s (2-2-1) Jordan Holmes had another solid performance in goal for the Eagles as she had 4 saves and held Central Washington (1-1-2) scoreless in the two overtime periods. CWU Goalie, Kori Butterfield had two saves for the Wildcats.
CWU outshot NU 23-15, getting 5 shots in the second overtime. Northwest had 8 corner kicks to Central's four. The game was a physical contest as a total of 33 fouls was called, 21 levied against CWU.
"Jordan (Holmes) came up with some big saves for us once again," said NU coach, Erin Redwine. "Our midfield was creative and produced some quality chances for us. We are happy with the result as Central Washington is a quality team."
Northwest U. remains on the road as they will travel to Lacey, Wash., on Saturday to rake on their second straight NCAA Division II opponent in St. Martin's University at 3 p.m.
