SEATTLE—In the first meet of the new year, Concordia track and field teams accumulated 14 new NAIA indoor national qualifying performances and added four school records in action at the University of Washington Preview held at Dempsey Indoor on Saturday.

Leading the way for the Cavs was NyEma Sims, who won the 200-meter dash in record-setting fashion. Touring the track in 24.97, Sims handled the field by more than a half of a second as Eastern Washington’s Whitney Leavitt posted the second fastest time of the day with a 25.55. Sims’ time also destroyed the former school record of 26.41 set in 2010. With another school record in the 60-meter dash, Sims darted to a 7.53 to earn the NAIA ‘A’ standard in the short sprint as well.

CU women also registered ‘A’ marks in the 60-meter hurdles with Eunice Makinde crossing in 9.18; the 800 with Junia Limage recording a 2:17.05 and in the 3,000 as Gina Paletta was timed in 9:57.93.

In the throws, the Cavs received auto marks from Kayla Xavier and Gabriella Dixson in the shot put while the duo was joined by Sharayah Kenady for three ‘A’ marks in the weight throw.

Jameson Futter highlighted action on the men’s side by nipping his own school record in the 60 with a 7.04, edging his previous collegiate best of 7.10. CU gained ‘A’ performances from Andrew Landstrom in the 3,000 with an 8:37.96 while Bo Johnson launched a 54-3 3/4 effort in the weight throw and Jasen Brown finished with a school record 1:21.63 in the 600 to reach provisional status.

“We had great overall performances from the kids that were here today,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We are still missing a few people that we will get into competition in the next few meets, but this was a great day of competition with another group that got qualifiers.”

The Cavaliers will return to action in Seattle as part of the University of Washington Indoor Invitational held at the Dempsey Indoor on Jan. 27-28.
