Cavs Overcome Long-Distance Barrage from Multnomah

Portland, Ore.—With four players in double figures, Concordia defeated Multnomah University 91-82 in non-conference men’s basketball action on Tuesday night.
With the win, Concordia improved to 12-8 on the season while Multnomah fell to 10-12 overall after just its third loss on its home court all season.
The Lions played the Cavs tough on their home floor after suffering a 97-53 loss earlier in the season at Concordia. Seven different players struck for a 3-pointer against the Cavs as the Lions shot 17-of-41 (41.5 percent) from beyond the arc.
A pair of threes from Gian Cook and another by Austin Hodges helped give Multnomah a quick 11-8 lead out of the gate. Quickly responding, a 14-5 streak capped by a three from Drew Preuninger at the 13-minute mark gave the Cavs a six-point lead. Behind 15 first-half points from Jourdan Sweeney, the Cavs would go on to extend the advantage to 46-37 at the half despite the Lions connecting on eight shots from long range, including 4-of-6 from Tyler Yates.
The score at the break could have been tighter if not for a three by Kevan West with three seconds remaining.
West scored five quick points to start the second half as the Cavs would go on to create as much as a 21-point lead with the score 74-53. The buzz of a 28-16 run over the first six minutes to start the half was muted as the Lions crept back into the contest with another bombardment of long-ranged attacks.
Austin Hodges took over in the middle minutes by converting 4-of-6 from 3-point land to score 16 of his team high 18 points down the stretch.
Sweeney, West and Adam Herman combined to shoot 25-of-33 for the Cavs the trio netted 59 total points with Herman and West sharing the game-high at 21 points. The pair both grabbed nine rebounds to fall a single carom away from recording double-doubles. Their efforts helped CU gain a 41-to-23 domination in total rebounds.
Marquis Matthews was the final Cavalier to reach double figures with 10 points, one shy of matching a season high.
Overall, CU shot 51.4 percent from the field while Multnomah was close by at 49.2 percent. Hitting eight threes, including 4-of-5 from West, Concordia shot a season-high 22 from the distance. Meanwhile, the Lions took 41 3-point attempts.
The game represented the final non-conference tilt for the Cavs who will host crosstown rival Warner Pacific on Saturday. Opening tip is slated for 7:30 p.m. against the Knights.
