Oregon Tech Gets Past Simpson, Gomez Reaches Milestone
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech used a 10-1 run over the course of a three minutes span early in the second half to move out to their first double digit lead, on the way to an 89-73 win over Simpson University in non-conference men’s basketball action tonight at Danny Miles Court.
Third-ranked Oregon Tech moves to 16-2 overall and will resume Cascade Conference action this Saturday at rival Southern Oregon University beginning at 7:30 PM in their only CCC game of the week.
Three Owls finished in double figures led by Bobby Hunter, this week’s Cascade Conference Player of the Week, with 24 points, including a 5-for-10 effort from long range. Hunter added four rebounds and three assists on the night. Scotty Riddle netted 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, followed by Kyle Gomez with 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. With a late 3-pointer Gomez recorded his 1,001st point in an Owl uniform and becomes the 28th player in school-history to reach the 1,000 point plateau. Jason Gamblin added 11 points and six rebounds, while David Clarke recorded seven assists in the win for the Owls.
Calvin Smith led the Simpson attack with 16 points, followed by Bryan Castillo with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Travis Derochowski recorded the games only double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss for the Redhawks.
Oregon Tech finished 31-for-60 from the floor (51.7%), including 63.0% in the second half, and 19-of-22 from the charity stripe. Simpson shot 40.9% on the night, including a 9-for-23 effort from the 3-point line and 10-for-15 from the free throw line. Tech recorded 22 assists to just 12 turnovers, while Simpson finished with 10 assists and 12 turnovers.
