Conference Announces this Week's Athletes of the Week

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- Student-athletes from Warner Pacific College, Corban University, Concordia University and Eastern Oregon University have been named Red Lion Cascade Collegiate Conference Athletes of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29, the conference office announced Monday.

The honorees:

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Warner Pacific College’s Chelsey Christensen, a 5-9 junior guard from West Linn, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

Christensen guided the Knights to a weekend sweep at home over Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech. She totaled 38 points and 16 rebounds in the pair of victories. The junior shot 55 percent from the field, made 4-of-8 from three-point range and hit all four of her free-throw attempts.

Christensen was a rebound shy of a double-double in a 61-49 win over Southern Oregon Friday. She finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. She was 8-of-16 from the field. Saturday, Christensen had 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. She added seven rebounds in the 53-37 victory over Oregon Tech

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Corban University’s Jordan Carter, a 6-2 sophomore guard from Salem, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

Carter led the Warriors to a pair of road wins last week over The Evergreen State College and Northwest Christian University. He averaged 23.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in the two victories. Carter made 16 of his 32 attempts from the field, shot 41 percent from behind the arc and made all 10 of his free-throw shots.

Monday, Carter scored a career-high 33 points in a rescheduled game against Evergreen. He was 12-of-20 from the field in the contest that was delayed due to inclement weather. He made five of his nine three-pointers against the Geoducks. Carter then scored 14 points against rival, Northwest Christian, Friday.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK

Concordia University’s NyEma Sims, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

A week after establishing a new school record in the 60 meters, Sims came back to shatter the school mark in the 200 meters with a 24.29 at the University of Washington Invitational. The only NAIA competitor in the 200, Sims posted the top time of the day out of the 41-person field, with the next fastest well back at 24.50. Sims' time broke the school mark by a full two seconds. She now holds the No. 3 mark in the NAIA in both the 60 and the 200.

WOMEN'S INDOOR FIELD

Concordia University’s Gabriella Dixson, a junior from Battle Ground, Wash., has been named the Red Lion Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

Competing in an invitational with primarily NCAA Div. 1 athletes, Dixson, A five-time NAIA All-American in only two seasons, posted quality marks in both the shot put and the weight throw this weekend. Dixson turned in the No. 4 mark in the NAIA in the weight throw with a 55 feet, 5.25 inches (16.82m) effort and nearly matched her season-best in the shot put which ranks No. 7 in the NAIA.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK

Concordia University’s Matthew Clowes, a freshman from Stoke-on-Trent, England, has been named the Red Lion Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

Clowes shattered the Concordia school-record in the 5,000 meters last weekend at the University of Washington Invite with a time of 14:05.32. Converted due to being run on a 300-meter track, his NAIA posted time of 14:08.52 leads the NAIA by more than 28 seconds, as the No. 2 time on the list is a 14:36.73.

Clowes was the second collegiate to finish in the event behind Southern Utah's Cameron Levins, who currently holds the world-leading time in the 3,000 meters.

MEN'S INDOOR FIELD

Eastern Oregon’s Robbie Haynie, a senior from Nampa, Idaho, has been named the Red Lion Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29.

The junior hit three personal records at the Boise State University Jackson’s Invitational. His pole vault and high jump marks were NAIA Auto-Marks. Haynie raised his indoor pole vault school record from 17 feet, 2.75 inches to 17 feet, 6.5 inches (5.35 meters), and finish second behind a post-collegiate jumper. Haynie's vault equals his outdoor best from the 2011 NAIA National Championships. It is the best NAIA mark so far this season.

His high jump mark of 6 feet, 8.25 inches (2.04 m) is fifth in the NAIA. His time in the 60-meter hurdles was 8.75 seconds and qualified for the finals in the event.
