Southern Oregon's Thompson Picked Men's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year
LA GRANDE, Ore. – Southern Oregon’s Eric Thompson, an honorable mention NAIA All-American as a freshman last season, has been voted the 2012-13 Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s basketball Preseason Player of the Year by the CCC’s 10 head coaches.
Thompson headlines a 15-person preseason All-CCC team that features 13 returnees and two newcomers. A year ago, Thompson averaged 19.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He scored 20 or more points 12 times, and 30 or more points five times.
A native of Roseburg, Oregon, Thompson is entering his second season with the Raiders. " Eric is obviously very talented and has a pretty unique skill set for a big man at our level, stated SOU head coach Brian McDermott. “ The scary thing is, after scraping the rust off his basketball game last season; Eric comes back this year much improved. The game has slowed down for him and he has a much better understanding of how to use his abilities within our concepts; we see very few limits to his impact this year.”
Thompson is joined on the preseason squad by teammate Kyle Tedder, a junior guard and newcomer David Sturner. Sturner last played collegiately two seasons ago at NCAA Division I member Oregon State University. Sturner saw limited action in eight games prior to an illness and redshirt season.
Southern Oregon was one of four programs with multiple players on the all-star team. Eastern Oregon is represented by senior wing/forward Anthony Brown, senior post Jason Mumm and senior point guards Cody Thurmond and Trent Roos; Warner Pacific is represented by senior wing Stephan Harris and senior point guard William Sharp; Concordia is represented by junior forward Adam Herman and newcomer junior guard Tyler Velasques a transfer from Cabrillo College.
Corban, Oregon Tech, Northwest and Northwest Christian each has one representative on the preseason team.
