CORVALLIS – The top-ranked Southern Oregon men’s cross country team placed a close second to University of Victoria at the Oregon State Beaver Classic, while the women’s team earned a sixth-place spot Friday evening at Avery Park.
Eric Avila led the Raiders with a second-place finish, crossing the finish line of the 8k race in 24:32 to beat everyone outside of unattached runner Matthew Clowes (24:22). Tyler VanDyke placed 11th (25:02), Jared Hixon finished 12th (25:10) and Scott McIntyre took 13th (25:12). An 18th-place finish for Brett Hornig and a 19th-place finish for Nathan Normo gave SOU six of the top 19 finishers.
University of Victoria picked up 34 points to narrowly beat the Raiders (47 points) for the team championship, followed by UO Running Club (76), Lane C.C. (171) and Northwest (187). Victoria also claimed the women’s title with 22 points, while the Raiders picked up 162 points to finish sixth behind Portland (61), Portland State (90), Corvallis Running (112) and Oregon State (144). The SOU women finished two spots ahead of Oregon Tech and four places ahead of Warner Pacific.
“It was a good showing for the women’s team,” SOU head coach Grier Gatlin said. “They beat a pretty solid OIT team. The men were in a tight race the whole time and ran well, they just came up short. It was a good solid tune-up for conference.”
Alexandra Rudd led the women’s team with a personal record time of 22:49 on the 6k course to finish 21st, followed by teammate Anne Hagy in 22nd at 23:01. Jessie Rozario finished 40th (23:44), with Stephanie Ramirez coming in 48th (23:58) and Luisa Westley placing 58th (24:17).
The Raiders’ next competition will be two weeks from Saturday, when the Raiders will return to Portland for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship Meet.
