NU Second Half Goals Down Yotes
KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University scored two second half goals to earn a 2-0 shutout over the College of Idaho in Cascade Conference play today. NU now has sole possession of second place in the CCC as C of I drops into a tie with Northwest Christian for third. Today was also senior day as the team honored eight outstanding seniors and their families in a pre-game ceremony.
The teams battled in the first half as the skies opened up and pouring rain and wind made for wet play for about 25 minutes. Each team had 9 shots in the half and each goalkeeper made 4 saves to hold each team scoreless. C of I had two shots in the 44th minute that almost found the mark. McKenzie Anderson’s left footer at the 43:37 mark was stopped on a nice save by NU goalkeeper Patty Hughes.
Northwest U. (6-8-2, 5-1-1 CCC) picked up the pace in the second half as the sun broke through the clouds and pressed for a score with the first one coming in the 70th minute as Jessica Oliver would score from 9 yards out on a cross from Lindsey Field who took a pass from teammate Acacia Johnson from the right side. Senior Stephanie Cummins scored the clincher for the Eagles at the 75:11 mark as she scored on a touch from 6 yards out from Shea Samuelsen’s corner kick.
Patty Hughes earns the shutout for Northwest U. finishing with 8 saves for the game and Melissa Holmes-Joseph had 9 saves in goal for the College of Idaho (5-6-1, 4-3 CCC). NU outshot C of I 28-16 with 19 of their shots coming in the second half. On corner kicks, NU had 8 to C of I’s 1. Acacia Johnson and Jessica Oliver each had 6 shots for the Eagles and Sarah Hicks had four shots for C of I.
"It was clear in our pregame meeting the team wanted to honor our seniors today," commented Erin Redwine, NU head coach, "and that was accomplished for sure. I was so happy with our possession and how many chances were created as a result."
