Raiders Earn Senior Night Sweep of Evergreen

Southern Oregon honored its seniors prior to the match and picked up its 19th straight win and 14th straight sweep against Evergreen, picking up set victories by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-16 Friday night at Bob Riehm Arena.

Southern Oregon improves to 17-8 overall and 13-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, while Evergreen falls to 0-24 overall and 0-15 in the CCC. Both teams return to action tomorrow, with the Geoducks heading to Klamath Falls for a matchup with Oregon Tech and the Raiders hosting Northwest at 7 p.m. in the 2012 regular season home finale.

The Raiders recognized the four graduating student-athletes from the 2012 squad, inviting Haley Kasler, Natalie Scheller, Angela Spieker and Caryn Westrick and their families onto the court for a special ceremony. Friday’s match was also Breast Cancer Awareness night at SOU, as the Raiders partnered with Providence Medical Center and donated a portion of the paid admission to the Sister Therese Kohles Fund.

The Raiders hit .356 as a team and totaled only nine attack errors in the match, holding their team attack errors under double digits for the third time this season. Evergreen hit .010 in the match, including -.179 in the opening set.

Kasler led the way with 11 kills and a .409 attack percentage for the Raiders, while Westrick finished with 21 assists and Spieker added 15. Scheller and Jordan Crossley each finished with eight kills and Renee Yomtob posted 20 digs. Sasha Nash, Cassidy Watkins and Brittany Covert tied to lead Evergreen with four kills apiece, while Kameo Dela Cuadra finished with 12 assists.

Evergreen scored the first points in each set before the Raiders took command. In the opener, SOU used a 15-6 run to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 15-8 advantage. Following four straight Evergreen points, the Raiders opened a 10-point streak to clinch the set victory.

The Geoducks hung closer in the second and third sets. In the second set, Evergreen pulled within four points as late as 17-13 before the Raiders scored four straight points en route to the 25-16 win. In the final set, the visitors scored the first four points before SOU used a 15-5 run to pull ahead by six. Evergreen remained within five at 19-14 before the Raiders scored the next four points and clinched the match with a 6-2 streak.
