KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –  Oregon Tech saw an early lead in set 1 evaporate and never could bounce back against a solid Concordia University team, as the Cavaliers captured a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball victory tonight on “Volley for a Cure” night at Danny Miles Court, 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-16).

The loss drops Oregon Tech to 10-14 overall and 2-9 in the conference standings, while Concordia improved to 10-8 on the season and 7-4 in league play.

The opener went back-and-forth before CU broke out to a 13-8 lead.  The six point run was halted after Tech’s Julie Pfeifer got an attack to fall.  Another Pfeifer kill, along with a pair of CU errors, drew the Owls back to within a point, while Jennifer Saltenberger tied the set at 14-14 with a kill.  A controversial call on what appeared to be an ace for the Owls turned into a point for CU, as the momentum changed to the visiting side for the evening.  Trailing 15-16, the Cavs pushed out to 19-17 lead, while six-straight points secured a 25-17 win in set 1.  Kristen Walters recorded 5 kills in the opener, while the Cavs’ Amanda Goringe and Jackie Stein came up with 4 kills each.

Never trailing in set 2, the Cavs moved out to a 10-4 advantage, forcing the Owls into their first timeout.  Tech pulled to within three, 11-14, but the Cavaliers would manage to score 10 of the next 11 points and go to set point, 24-12.  The Owls would trail 2-0 as CU earned a 25-15 win in set 2.

Concordia never let down, as the Cavs scored the first seven points of set 3.  CU moved up 13-2 before the Owls cut their own deficit to five points, 11-16.  Tech would never get closer, however, as CU earned the sweep in what would be the final set, 25-16.

Kristen Walters finished with a team-high 10 kills for the Owls, while Jennifer Saltenberger added 7 kills and Julie Pfeifer 4 in the loss.  Marie Baumann recorded a team-high 14 digs with Kayleigh Whelchel and Megan Holland combining for 22 assists.

Jackie Stein led the Cavaliers with 14 kills in 26 attempts, hitting at a .500 clip, to lead CU’s offense.  Amanda Goringe added 8 kills with Brianna Hogan chipping in with 6 in the win.  Lindsay Mangan tallied 28 assists with Kelsey Kai anchoring the CU defense with a match-high 17 digs, along with Mangan’s 11.
