2012 NAIA Volleyball National Championship Qualifiers Announced
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially released the NAIA Volleyball National Championship qualifiers for the 33rd annual event. The 36-team tournament will get underway with the National Championship Opening Round at campus locations on Nov. 17. The 12 Opening Round winners, as well as host Morningside (Iowa), and the 11 additional schools that garnered byes, will advance to the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa, location of the NAIA National Championship final site presented by CNOS Nov. 27 - Dec. 1 in Sioux City, Iowa.
The pairings for the Opening Round matches will be released on Monday at 12 p.m. CST.
Defending national champion, Texas at Brownsville looks for its second-straight title after clinching an automatic berth by winning the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. The Scorpions come into the National Championship with a record of 26-1.
This year's 36 teams include 27 automatic qualifiers, - awarded to conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournament and regular-season champions - eight at-large bids and one host berth.
Five teams will be making their first trip to the National Championship including: Bryan (Tenn.), Davenport (Mich.), Ottawa (Kan.), The Master's (Calif.) and Viterbo (Wis.).
Making its 19th appearance, most out of any team in the field this year, is Columbia (Mo.). Columbia and Texas at Brownsville are the only teams in this year's field to have won a national title.
NeuLion, the NAIA's official video-streaming company of 12 select NAIA national championship events, will be broadcasting all single elimination matches of the 2012 Volleyball National Championship. The single-elimination matches starting at 10 a.m. CT on Nov. 30 will be streamed and continue through the championship final at 8 p.m. CST on Dec. 1.
