WPC Women Defeat Montana-Western at CCC/Frontier Challenge
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Warner Pacific women's basketball team defeated Montana-Western 74-68 today in the first game of the CCC/Frontier Challenge being held at Spokane Falls Community College.
A trio of Knights scored in double figures in the hard fought contest which saw the lead change hands 10 times during the game.
WPC led by as many as six in the first period, holding a 17-11 at the 12:13 mark lead after a Chelsey Christensen jumper. UMW went on a 9-2 run at that point to take a 20-19 lead. In the closing seconds of the half, Taylor Wofford hit a pair of free throws to give the Knights a 33-31 lead heading into the locker room.
The Bulldogs scored the first bucket of the second half, but WP responded with eight straight points to build a 41-33 advantage. UMW battled back and took a 51-50 lead with 9:44 on the clock thanks to a Sammi Bignell make from distance.
The Knights withstood the surge however, and Lacy Wood provided a spark off the bench for WPC down the strectch. The junior made 4 of 4 free throw attempts, and her short jumper gave the Knights a 66-56 lead and WP did not trail again.
Chelsey Christesen led Warner Pacific with 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting. Taylor Wofford added 14 points, while Nichole Jackson had 12 points and eight assists.
Montana Western was paced by a game high 17 points from Alecia Wilson, while Sammi Bignell had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Warner Pacific will play in the second game of the CCC/Frontier Challenge tomorrow vs. Rocky Mountain College.
