Strong Second Half Lifts LCSC Over Northwest U.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Lewis-Clark State overcame a four point halftime deficit to overtake Northwest University, 89-79, in the CCC-Frontier Challenge at Spokane Falls Community College this evening.
 
Northwest U. would come of the blocks in the first half to hit all 10 of their first shots in the early going. Michael Greene’s post move in the paint would give NU a 20-12 lead seven minutes into the half. The Eagles would continue with the hot hand and Nemanja Grujicic’s short jumper would make it 27-17 with 9:13 left in the period. Greene would hit another field goal at the 5:30 mark to grow NU’s lead to 39-27, but then LCSC would heat up and slowly get back in the game. Jacob Champoux’s jumper would make it a six point game, 39-33 and Danny Marshall would rebound his own shot to cut the NU lead to four, 39-35 with 3:19 to go until halftime. Champoux would drill a trey with 2:36 on the clock to make it a one point game, 39-38, but Greene would answer with two free throws and Ryan Dornik would hit a 3 pointer to give Northwest a 44-38 lead with 1:17 left. Champoux would hit one of two free throws and Marshall would score in transition with 37 seconds left as Northwest would hold on to a 44-41 lead going into the locker room. NU would finish the half shooting 71% while LCSC managed 50% shooting.
 
The second half would remain close as neither team would gain the upper hand for most of the period as there would be 9 ties and 7 lead changes in the half. With the game knotted up at 74-74 and 6:10 to go in the game, Lewis-Clark State would make their move. Jacob Champoux would hit two straight 3 pointers to give LCSC a 6 point lead (80-74), a lead they would maintain the remainder of the game. NU’s Nick Crossan would close the gap to 77-74 with his trey, but Champoux would answer with a free throw and a jumper to put Lewis-Clark up six, 83-77, with 2 minutes on the clock. With Northwest forced to foul, the Warriors would make good their free throws as P.J. Bolte would seal the victory with his free throw with 41 seconds to go giving LCSC the 89-79 lead and the victory.
 
Northwest U. (6-2) was led by senior Ryan Dornik’s 18 points including 50% shooting from the 3 point line (6 for 12). Michael Russo added 15 points and Michael Greene scored 14 and grabbed 6 rebounds. Ryan McIntosh added 13 points and 4 assists for the Eagles who shot 56% for the game.
 
Jacob Champoux (Seattle, Wash.) led Lewis-Clark State (5-0) with a game high 25 points hitting 73% of his shots (8-11). Danny Marshall scored 20 points and tallied 8 rebounds and Robert Ellis contributed 12 points. Lewis-State shot 56% on the night, 73% (8-111) from the 3 point line. They won the battle of the rebounds with a 30 to 22 edge including 15 offensive boards.
 
“We played tough tonight but ran out of gas in the second half,” said John Van Dyke, Eagle head coach. “We need to be better defensively and I’m confident our guys will rise to the challenge.”
 
Northwest U. continues play in the Challenge tomorrow when they meet Rocky Mountain College at 7 p.m. at Spokane Falls CC.
