Raiders Hold Off Late Warrior Run for 82-70 Win

KLAMATH FALLS – The 23rd-ranked Southern Oregon men’s basketball team continued its hot shooting and held off a late William Jessup run to defeat the Warriors 82-70 Saturday afternoon at the Midland Empire Insurance Classic.
Southern Oregon improves to 4-2 with the win, while William Jessup falls to 1-5. The Raiders return to action Tuesday evening in a non-conference rivalry showdown, hosting No. 2 Oregon Tech at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.
Southern Oregon shot 56 percent in the contest (28-of-50), including 60 percent in the second half (15-of-25). David Sturner connected on eight of 13 shot attempts to lead SOU with 19 points, while Eric Thompson scored 15 points on only eight shot attempts. Terriel Thomas tallied 11 points with eight rebounds, and both Kyle Tedder and Dex Daum added 10 points for the Raiders.
Kirill Sergeyev led William Jessup with 15 points, while Keenan Prince finished with 11. Jordan Wilson and Kelton Newman each scored 10 points for the Warriors.
Thompson hit a three-pointer to put the Raiders on the board first, and Southern Oregon led the rest of the way. They pushed their lead to as many as 15 points several times in the first half, but William Jessup closed the half on a 16-8 run to pull within seven at halftime.
The Raiders scored the first nine points after the break to stretch their lead to 46-30, and a three-pointer by Tedder helped SOU push its lead to 20 points at 53-33 with 15:20 to play. A layup by Ben Chung sparked a 30-12 run for the Warriors that brought them all the way back to within two at 65-63 with just under seven minutes to play, but the Raiders responded with a 12-3 run to push the advantage back into double figures going into the final minutes.
