EUGENE, Ore. – Five players scored in double-figures for the Northwest Christian University women’s basketball team on Friday night but it wouldn’t be enough as the Southern Oregon Raiders came in to grab a 79-68 victory in the Morse Event Center.
Southern Oregon (9-1, 1-0 CCC) was led by Alexi Smith who was a force in the paint to the tune of 20 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists, all team highs. Melissa Sweat, despite missing most of the first half of action in foul trouble, connected for 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Angelica Cahee came off the bench to score ten, adding a game-high five steals.
NCU (6-4, 0-1) was led by Lindsey Shearer, scoring a double-double of her own with 20 points, eleven rebounds, four assists and three steals, all of which led the Beacons. Tami Brown came off the bench to score 12 points and snare three blocks while Andrea Gloss and Kelsey Atkins added ten points apiece.
Aly Bruns scored eleven points and hit a pair of three-pointers, moving her into a first-place tie for the most career three-pointers in NCU history (113, Jeneca Crocker).
Northwest Christian shot 36% in the game while allowing the Raiders to hit on 48%. SOU out-rebounded the Beacons 45-33 and survived a 29-turnover night that led to eleven NCU steals.
NCU will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Oregon Tech. Southern Oregon travels to Salem to take on Corban University. Both games will tip-off at 5:30 pm.
