BOX SCORE - Concordia vs. Puget Sound
TACOMA, Wash.—The Concordia women’s basketball team fell 68-58 on the road to Puget Sound on Sunday.
The Cavaliers dropped to 5-7 with the loss, while Puget Sound, who had already beaten Concordia’s CCC rivals Evergreen State and Northwest, improved to 7-3.
The Cavs scored the first points of the game on a jumper from Grace Cappleman, but quickly relinquished the lead for good a few minutes later. Free throws from the Loggers’ Sarah Stewart gave her team their first and final lead with 2:26 off the clock.
The Cavaliers remained as close as they could in the first half, staying within single digits until the Loggers went on a run late in the period. Senior guard Malori Dixon helped keep her team close as she scored 10 of the Cavs’ 21 first-half points.
Dixon played only one minute in the second half though, and the Loggers took advantage, going on a 12-3 run at the start of the period. The Loggers led 46-24 by the end of the run and the Cavaliers would never get back within single digits.
The Cavs did cut the lead towards the end of the second half as they went on a 13-3 run of their own with five minutes left in the game. Point guard Kelly Huey helped lead the team’s play over the stretch as she scored six of the 13 points.
Huey’s play during the run was part of a strong second half for the newcomer who scored 15 of her 17 points in the game after halftime, as well as grabbing six of her nine rebounds. In addition, Huey went 12-for-12 from the line in the game, increasing her team-leading free throw percentage to .888.
Huey’s 17 points and nine rebounds led the Cavs on Sunday as well, while Dixon’s 10 points tied Gabi Beyer, who returned after missing the Cavs’ last four games due to injury, for second-most on the team.
Next up, the Cavaliers can break a current four-game losing streak when they host Southern Oregon on Friday, Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. The Cavaliers’ game against the Raiders on Friday will also be the team’s first CCC home game of the season.
