EUGENE, Ore.  – In their final game before Christmas, senior Lindsey Shearer posted 24 points to lift the Northwest Christian University women’s basketball team to their third straight win, a 69-66 decision over Corban University. It was the Beacons second home win ever against the Warriors.

NCU held the Warriors to just 33% shooting and after leading 40-27 at half-time, survived a late surge for the win. Head Coach Liz Turner-Bolton said, “We had a great first half, forcing them to do some different things on offense. We passed the ball well and our defense was definitely clicking.”

Shearer accented her strong night with eight rebounds and three assists. Having hit just four three-pointers in the first 14 games of the season, the senior connected on three to lead the Beacons. Shearer bumped her career scoring total to 971 points on Saturday, jumping into third-place on NCU’s all-time scoring list. She needs just 29 points to become the third player in school history to break the 1,000 point milestone.

“Lindsey has been solid this week,” said Turner-Bolton, referencing the 18 points and 7.7 rebounds per game that her senior leader posted this week in leading NCU to three straight CCC victories. “Every team has been throwing two defenders on her but she plays a complete game. If you shut her down in one area she’ll hurt you in another and her passing ability alone is helping us every night.”

Katie Collins added 14 points and four assists while Tami Brown came off the bench with another stellar performance, scoring a season-high 14 points. She added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Chandler Gabrio also scored ten points off the bench. Aly Bruns scored just two points, but led all players with five steals to go along with five assists and two blocked shots.

Corban (3-12, 0-5 CCC) was led off the bench by Tara VanWeerdhuizen, scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds. She was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Tess Bennett added ten points for the Warriors as the only other player in double-figures. Emily Tsugawa scored seven points and six rebounds, to go with five steals and a game-high seven assists.

The Beacons will be back on the court on December 29th when they travel to face Western Oregon at 2:00 pm.
