VANCOUVER, Wash.—With the spirit of giving back ever-present during the holiday season, the Concordia women's basketball team did its part as players and coaches volunteered at the NE Hazel Dell Community Youth Holiday Event at Sarah J. Anderson Elementary earlier this month.

About 800 kids attended the event with members of the Concordia women's basketball team helping out in a variety of activities.

Before the event, the Concordia volunteers helped put together the envelopes each kid received as they entered. The Concordia players and coaches were then stationed throughout the school during the event as they helped run the candy cane reindeer station as well as the face-painting table. In addition, a couple of lucky women's basketball players got to play Santa's elves for the night and pass out gifts to the kids in attendance.

At the end of the night, organizers raffled off 32 bicycles and 10 decorated Christmas trees, while volunteers also passed out food boxes to needy families.

"Our team, like in other community service outreach projects we've done, jumped in and helped where needed,” said CU head coach Aaron Christian. “It was especially nice for our team to participate in an event like this after they had just gone through a grueling week of finals.

“I am proud of our team for helping make a difference in other people's lives."

Before its 2012-13 season began, the Concordia women's basketball team also volunteered at the Walk to End Alzheimer's back in September. To read the press release for that event, click here.
