LA GRANDE, Ore. – With three more weeks of conference play, the Cascade Collegiate Conference begins a crucial late stretch for many teams on the women’s and men’s sides.
A rare matchup between two CCC women’s basketball teams in the top 15 in NAIA Div. 2 meet Friday in Salem. No. 8 Eastern Oregon University is at No. 13 Corban University in a battle for sole possession of first place in the conference. Both teams enter the game on six-game win streaks, and both teams have only two conference losses. EOU (19-4, 11-2 CCC) is 12-2 away from home this season, while the Warriors are 10-1 at home. Corban (16-5, 10-2) has won the past two meetings over Eastern, including a 73-59 win in at EOU on Jan. 7, but the Mountaineers have won four of the past five inside the C.E. Jeffers Center.
The following night, Corban hosts The College of Idaho (15-7, 10-3) in another matchup of two of the top three teams in the conference standings. The Lady Yotes grabbed a 66-60 win in Caldwell over Corban on Jan. 6. C of I has won four consecutive games, and six of the past seven. College of Idaho sits just out of the national Top 25.
This week’s marquee men’s basketball matchup in the Cascade Collegiate Conference takes place Saturday night in Kirkland at 7:30. No. 10 Warner Pacific College (18-5, 10-2) travel to No. 11 Northwest in a battle between two teams atop the conference standings. WPC won the first meeting this year in Portland, 69-56. The Eagles (21-2, 11-2) have won a conference-high five games in a row. The Knights are 10-1 at home this season, while NU is 11-1 on the road.
Southern Oregon (15-9, 8-5), which is just outside the top 25, visits rival No. 2 Oregon Tech Saturday. OIT (22-3, 11-2) has won five straight games over the Raiders dating back to a 74-61 loss in Ashland, on Feb. 10, 2009.
