Joshua Orr tossed six shutout innings in Game 2 win
CALDWELL, Idaho - Jesse Dodd went 6-for-7 with four doubles and three RBI, while Joshua Orr and three relievers combined for a two-hit shutout in Game 2, as The College of Idaho opened the 2012 home season with a 16-3 and 9-0 sweep of Whitman College at Wolfe Field.
The Coyotes (4-2) won for the 13th and 14th-straight time against the Division III Missionaries.
Game 1 saw Whitman (0-2) strike first on an Aaron Cohen sacrifice fly in the first, but The C of I responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, capped by a two-run double from Tanner Hodges. Zachary Fabricius gapped a two-run double in the third to push the lead to 5-1, with back-to-back RBI doubles from Todd Griffiths and Dodd helped the Yotes take a 9-1 lead after five innings - with the squad emptying their dugout, as 17 position players saw action.
Chad Yeggy picked up the win, throwing seven innings of eight-hit, two-run ball. Both Fabricius and Griffiths went 4-for-6 with four RBI in the Game 1 win, with Hodges going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Kyle Buckham and Jimmy Madden each had two hits for Whitman.
Game 2 was dominated by Orr and the Yotes pitchers - as the senior allowed just two hits in six innings, striking out five. The C of I broke open a scoreless game in the fourth, as Izaac Garsez led off with a triple and scored on a Jarel Lewis sacrifice fly. Dodd followed with an RBI double - part of a three-run frame. Dodd added an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0, with Garsez roping a two-run single in a four-run sixth to cap the scoring.
Dodd had three hits in the win, with Garsez and Griffiths each logging two. C of I relievers Michael Garza, Seth Raver, and Bryan Hildebrand did not allow a hit in three innings of relief, striking out six.
The series concludes tomorrow with a Noon doubleheader.
